Prince fans have such a high standard in music. Essentially we have been blessed with getting almost 40 albums. 100's of boots and quality concerts. Its hard for other artists to compete with that... i see what you are saying however. Good point. . [Edited 5/22/14 8:13am]

Bowie tends to inspire a classier breed of fan. I have had very intelligent conversations with vitually every Bowie fan I've ever met. Here, for the most part, we get that fucking MASTERPIECE dude/chick.
I think Housequake was where most of the reasonable fans liked to hang out.
When it shut down I had to come over here and I feel like I've lost IQ points in the process.
That mysterious, spiritual teacher bullshit brings the weirdos out of the woodwork. Game wreckonize game, I suppose.

i agree. I spend more time on the bowie forum talking about music in general not just bowie music. And you never get this, yeah but Bowie this and bowie that. You can comment negatively or postively on Bowies output and people wont insult you by saying it is genius they will have constructive reasons etc. its brilliant. here really is just obsessives 'one direction type' fans sometimes! not all of you

I'm not a huge Bowie fan, I like his classic period and I'm not much knowledgable on anything past the early 80s so forgive me if this is wrong - but he doesn't have quite that same manic Messianic quality to his mystique that Prince has - Which I think accounts for some of the 'eccentricities' you see amongst Prince fans. . I know Bowie has a strong image(s) and stage persona, backstory mythos, personal cult etc, but Prince's is almost quasi-religious in it's fervour. It's creeping up there into MJ fan territory at times, and I think Prince brought it on himself somewhat initially with his evangelical lyrics and mysterious persona crafting, and then later on in the 90s when he was preaching to the converted and cultivating a them against us attitude amongst the fanbase (which eventually imploded in on it's self when he literally used divide and conquer with all his website stuff and lawsuits). . Bowie being British and Prince being American probably also accounts for some of this. Nuff said.

Actually, this is not a shit place because folks talk about other artist's music in a juvenile way (I see that ALL the time on other fansites...Just go to a Radiohead site and try to have a discussion about any of the bands doing it today...They will get mocked and laughed at)....
The problem at the Org is this is no longer a safe, informative place for Prince fans....Indeed, there is a thin line between blind fanaticism and good ol' fashion fandom...But you get the sense here that people are often times shitted on for going to a Prince site and being (gasp!) Prince fans...
That's something you wouldn't see at a Bowie site....

Bowie used to have this incredible mystique about himself and he has totally regained it. No-one knows what he is doing, where he is, is he recording? can he tour? will he ever speak in public again? any of that. Prince still has his mystique but i think he has confused it a bit over the years.
However its not just about Bowie i was talking about it is about music in general and to be honest, the people on this site are really over the top and dont take a step back from the music and the man to make a real opinion. Its like when a new song comes out everyone goes, 'masterpiece' 'best song he has ever done' two weeks later, 'this song is awful, worst thing he has ever done' then people really get nasty talking about why someone has had an opinion... its mental.

This is something we very much need to change, IMO. Prince's fanbase is skewing FAR younger than Bowie's. We have a LOT of teens and people in their early twenties here. Prince has successfully cultivated a new generation of fans. Indeed, if you look at some of the most popular P groups on Facebook and fervent fans on Twitter you'll notice a lot of teens being the most active members. Bowie's great, but I don't see many people younger than 40 checking for him. So with that in mind, this place ought to be welcoming to new and younger fans. The org has a reputation for negativity and we've lost some great posters because of it. I personally won't stand for it, and if rectifying that means more warnings and more dropping of the ban hammer then it is what it is. |

Bowie has a LOT of young fans in their teens and twenties on his fan sites. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

I am 28 and i am a massive Bowie fan. Therefore Bowie appeals to everyone. All generations know him he is still classed as a total class act.
Its a strange one really but the intent of this thread was to enlighten people on what could be a good forum without the nastiness.

The org posts improved overnight, when the NPGMC introduced a forum. .

Being a huge Bowie fan, i don't post on that forum, but bowie fans are great in general.Bowie really paved the way for many artists and bands in terms of music and image(so did Prince, but Bowie was there way earlier).Bowie has LOADS of young fans, i dare to say even more than Prince, but that's just from experience interacting with other people my age. also i think bowie is more respected than Prince though. not right because both are incredibly influencial.

Bowie does appeal to young people. I'd say he has quite a large fanbase amongst younger people, (myself included), maybe even more so than Prince. Then again, I know a lot of people who just think Bowie is boring and Prince is weird. Hundalasiliah!

Once upon at time, there was a plethora of really awesome Prince fan sites on the internet, with some of the most knowlegable interesting people having lots of fun and happily engaging with each other in this thing called life and all things Prince. Somebody didn't like that and worked deliberately to bring an end to it and they did. What we have left - as far as fan sites go - is what it is.
Thankfully though, there's still many of us out there and we're still having lots of fun! I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Preach!!!! They can be downright nasty at times.
The org may have a reputation as "negative" but I don't get that at all. I think people choose to see this place that way. i think the org can be whatever you choose it to be.
I like that I can talk about Prince, good or bad. I have never understood why those who view it as a bad thing, don't go and start another site where they can be all sunshine and lollipops. If you choose to participate here, you have to accept it for what it is. The one thing I appreciate most about Ben is I've never felt censored in my being able to post my opinion.
I don't get the glamorization of Housequake. There were some nasty folks on that site too.

The irony? It's swung to the other side of lunacy....
It's no longer the FAMS causing issues.....

The proof was in the pudding when NPGMC started. The Fams ran off, the org calmed down (it was even a little too quiet), and the general negativity didn't go up, it went down. There was much more constructive critisism and praise. .

On a completely different tack regarding Prince and Bowie, we used to have round our way a recovering alcoholic heroin addict who, in his many stupors, would insist that Bowie was responsible for every rock and pop idiom that ever existed. We could be listening to Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, Television... and he'd always lapse into a Bowie Adoration Episode that lasted until he was incapable of speech.
Eventually I leant him my copy of N.E.W.S., and he thought it was the most mind-blowingly awesome sequence of recorded events he'd heard in a long while. He returned the CD sober. We didn't see him again for a good few months at least, presumably on account of his not comprehending this CD being recorded by Prince. Or he was just trollied listening to Maha Vishnu Orchestra. It's hard to gauge people sometimes.

Actually, I don't see many FAMS left on this site...God knows I've had my rumbles with them (I once got into argument with a P-FAM because they were insulted that I referred to P as The Midget...)...So I see wher you are coming from in a way....
However, what I see now is a bunch of folks trying too hard to be cool...Folks who believe belittling someone who thinks that something as mundane as believing that Prince is a better guitarist than he was in the '80s can be viewed as blind worship...
Like I said, there's two sides to this coin....There are the folks that believe that Prince's shit smells like Ice cream, Lavender, and sunshine...And there are the others who believe that it's not cool to praise Prince because it may look like you are kissing his ass....
To be honest, as dismayed as I was with the behavior of some of the more hardcore FAMS, I'm as equally bewildered at how this site has transformed into a petty, mean-spirited Bitch-fest populated by folks who believe that Prince is a Has-Ben....And that's the only convo to be had...
The irony is I can almost understand the LOONS being at a Prince website because it is a Prince Fansite....But what's the excuse of folks who spend their times making yet another post about how Prince has lost it and that you are boot licking FAM for thinking otherwise....
I don't think people understand this rarely takes place on other fan sites....
It is what it is....U guys keep being cool....

Why anyone cares what others think about why they are here is beyond me.
Anyone thinking everything someone does is great is unrealistic and I have a "problem" with those people but I usually just ignore them. They can be as bad as the "never have anything good to say" people.

Could sombody explain to me what the Prinefams were? or whatever. When all this shit was happening i was like 13 and listening to shitty animu music >tfw just admitted to being a weeaboo in her past
But yeah, the whole 'negative' thing have seen attributed to the org a lot. I was talking to a guy in the line when Prince played the academy in Febuary and he said he left because of the drama and arguments. When i see somewhat negative threads now and again i just ignore them for the most part.
