One of the first songs I can remember loving and begging my dad to play all the time.. Hard to believe it's almost as old as I am! Still a great song.

Everybody stop on the 1...GOOD GOD! Uhh!

What a great song!

Prince really went all out on this one, a bona fide classic. It's amazing how succsesful the song was considering it's lyrical content. (at the time) Perhaps that's WHY it's so good. It's a very deep song, also very catchy.

And of course, the yelps and screams of the purple one at the end! Incredible vocal performance. I've seen Prince live only once, but he didn't perform When Doves Cry, so now I've absolutley have to see him again.

Can't beileve it's 30 years old!

My first memories of Prince were of watching its music video, and needless to say, I was stunned.

What does the song mean to all you diehard fans here on the org? Any stories on when you first heard the song?

Aliens couldn't decipher 'When Doves Cry'. It's one of the reasons they don't dare come here. PRINCE CRACKED THE CODE!!!

Aside from the classical conclusion and the basslessness, nothing I can find intresting in that song. "How can you just leave me standing" is so repetitive it hurts.

EDIT: So I gave WDC another listen minutes ago, the guitar solo at the beginning is also a highlight, it all goes down from there, the lyrics are just not there, it's typical sex allegory that is easily predictable, the only standout line is "Animals strike curious poses, they feel the heat, the heat between you & me"... The chorus is just so lame, "How can you just leave me standing? Maybe you're just like my mother, she's never satisfied"? How can I relate to that? If I ever mention that line to a friend who's not familiar with Prince or the song he'd think that my mother ain't having enough rough sex with my father. The coolest thing after that is the classical instrumentation at the end... Purple Rain the song is a much better song, it should be the one ranked higher on Rolling Stone Best Songs of All time....

I was completely mesmerized when I first heard it on the radio. I immediately called the station to request it again. smile

This is a true story :

I used to have a black 3 legged cat in the eighties and he just loved this song so much that every time the song would finish he would wake up from his "meditative" state and "request" the song to be played again and again , and he used a special sound different from his usual meaw.

I was amazing! We both loved this song so much!

I love that he noted this at the show on Saturday in Manchester.

He said something like,"30 Years ago, this month... It was all about this!" then trigged the sample, and did the whole thing.

The crowd went suitably nuts. cool
