Now that he's got his masters back, should P (at last) release the 2 CD's of Crystal Ball II?

Since it seems P couldn't release vault material without WB's consent and that this may have prevented the release of CBII, should he at last honor the selection fans made at the Celebration and allow us to fill this crystal box with 2 additional CD's with proper CD cases and cover art for The Truth and Kamasutran, as originally planned?

I think it'd be a nice, unexpected and funny over-delayed gift to us fans, God knows we deserved it for our patience given the number of announced then shelved releases over the last 15 years!

No. These kind of outtake collections are usually not compelling at all, especially the way CB was done.

Now is absolutely not the right time.

With a 30th Anniversary Purple Rain (likely with bonus material), a new Prince album, and a TBD 3EG album on the way, another Crystal Ball collection would saturate the market and confuse buyers. Exactly what WB warned Prince about in the 80s.

Well I'm not saying like next week but say in the second half of 2015 maybe, once the PR remaster hype is over.

I'm also talking an online order only release from P's website, not a stores or iTunes release: unlikely to confuse the average music listener.

I'd rather have any momentum put toward future remastered albums and out takes/unreleased songs. Not in a standalone CB2.

Now, I would be interested in a Pay-Per-Song download Vault store in lossless quality. Throw a few hundred songs up there (alternate takes, remixes, new songs) and see what happens. NOT a subscription model and not a pre-packaged "album".

I really don't think outtake/b-sides work well outside their original albums. Compilations still have to sound good, but Crystal Ball sounded like a pile of unmatching bits and pieces. Any vault material should go with the corresponding remaster.

I very much doubt the terms of the deal mean Prince can just release what he wants. He is clearly under licence to WB for an unknown period of time, they are not going to want the market flooded.

No one knows the exact deal, but I'm guessing Prince isn't "signed" to WB. It clearly says "Licenced".

So I think Prince will get the masters back on a project basis upon remaster completion. So if Prince plays ball, he gets what he wants at the end of it. Maybe the unreleased stuff will be the same.

So if, for example, Roadhouse Garden gets released, then it happens under licence with WB, and upon release, the masters ownership transfer to Prince.

This would still allow Prince to release non WB material however he chooses. So 3EG can bereleased with whoever he wants.

Right, because that didn't confuse the shit out of everyone the last time he did it.

Put it in a store or on iTunes. My patience for the scavenger hunt is getting thin. I'm not 13 any more.

I doubt the exclusive terms of P's contract prevents him to release anything else elswhere, or he'd better write slave on his cheek again right now. I think all they got is an exclusivity on the first edition of "their" album's remasters and the new "Prince" album.

I wish!

As for the criticism that Crystal Ball ('98) is just a hodgepotch... it is... but besides being a great "bootleg" type release loosely mimicking the style of bootleg compilations (and who is complaining when a batch of studio bootlegs unofficially gets out?)...

Many of his albums are similarly compiled just as Crystal Ball ('98) was. In fact, hearing the heavy deep Joy in Repitition on lighter pop vibe of Graffiti Bridge felt more throwaway to me than any inclusion of a classic bootleg track on Crystal Ball ('98).

"Joy In Repetition" successfully adds shitloads of depth to GB though and to me that's a good thing for the album.

Not successfully, in my opinion, and the visualization of it in the movie really is a low. It was too good for that album or movie.

Databank, you have 3 threads about Crystal Ball II active at the same time. Aren't you more interested in what might be on the remastered Purple Rain (which is actually happening)?

.

Seems like you are asking the same question looking for different answers . . .

Well, I'm not going to disagree on the visualization part. lol

I've never thought it doesn't fit the album, although it makes more "sense" as the closer of a side on the LP release than as just one track in the middle of the CD. It's kind of cool to me that one of those songs that the fans generally rank really high is found on that album.

I'm asking very different questiona actually.

I'm interested in what's gonna be on the PR remaster but as there's no info yet there's nothing to speak about save speculation and we've done that already. I don't really care for the remaster as such, though, only for whatever previously unreleased material will be added to the set.

Altogether I think I've had as much of a ball with CB in 98 than with PR when I first purchased it in 90, so for me both albums are topics of interest smile

There's a lot of great stuff on CB, that's for sure. If you add in The Truth (after all, we got them all at once) it was a very good time.
