Obvious cover not credited to Prince While I was looking for some Italian artists I came across Angelo Branduardi, who apparantly had a big hit in 1995 with "Fou de love". It reminded me of something, so I checked the liner notes but it just stated the artists name. So, you tell me, am I hearing things that are not there or is this a blatant cover of a song Prince gave to someone else?

That is indeed "Love ..Thy will Be Done"!!. How did he get away with that?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Exactly! Singing melody, chords, solo slightly changed, even the background harmonies are copied...

That's not what ASCAP does or ever did.

True, my bad: it seems they only sue for public performances/airing. I don't know who does it for unlicensed covers, though, but someone didn't do their job. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Prince and his publishing company are responsible for that. I'm sure tracking down obscure covers from foreign artists isn't high on their list of priorites, BUT I think you just helped get somebody sued. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

So not only prince steals from others. Oh well....

It is simply "Prince decision making." For example, when recording Diamonds And Pearls...if somebody said, "What should be on the album, Jughead or the original version of Old Friends 4 Sale? the obvious answer would be Jughead, of course.
Now if somebody asked, "Hey, somebody covered Love Thy Will Be Done" In Italy, but somebody else also used your symbol on a website that has 12 hits in the last 4 years... who should we go after first????, then, the decision process gets more complicated, despite it being much more likely he would sue the fan with the use of the symbol.
That's just the way it is with Prince and his decision making. Sometimes logical thinking, sometimes "Holy Batcrap." [Edited 5/14/14 11:19am]

. . Exactly, it's Prince, publishers, and labels responsibility to catch it. Unless it's really obvious, or someone alerts them, this would be really easy to miss. Then again, they might have determined it wasn't worth going after, or there could have been a settlement where he's paying out royalties for that track to avoid getting sued. ASCAP directories could help locate the infringer, but a lot of times those aren't current either.

Has it been considered whether or not this might be an officially countenanced "cover", through some behind-the-scenes business arrangement and/or by way of international law (and that an Anglicized [or other non-native language] set of liner notes may not reflect, and/or may not be obliged or permitted to disclose [even natively], those underlying business or legal arrangements)? . . And that, since it is a cover of a song performed by an associated artist of relatively modest renown, recorded 3-4 years before this foreign artist's rendition, it would not rightly be perceived to be a widely recognizable Prince "canon" song nor something with a high likelihood for immense commercial potential, such that Prince would mandate being visibly attached to it (or, even if so, the intricacies of international law might complicate such interests). . . I wouldn't trust that Prince would feel Branduardi could produce a Euro-scale equivalent to 1990's "Nothing Compares 2 U", nor that Prince/WB would necessarily be able to obtain the public attributions across multiple legal systems or the industry practices abroad even if so (or find it in his, PP's, or WB's best economic interests at the time any such agreement may have occurred). . . If it is truly the shamelessly plagiarized track the original poster suggests, then, as other posters have stated, the complexities in attempting to assert or enforce copyright protections (if available) in the respective countries might make legal action not a viable use of the interested parties' precious time, money, and energies. . . Thanks to the op, poor Angelo Branduardi, will be getting a call from the Purple Police. Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

^ And he's giving Prince's fro a run for its money!

I don't think he could sue for the 'fro, but the song? wow.
Still, P isn't exactly innocent when it comes down to thievery.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
. True, but it's kinda inconsequential if he's guilty. I guess he can use that argument to try and pay less damages.

these guy is not italian,he is the biggest bosnian star and its crazy that he claims its his song.

Well Bosia must be something like the least developped country in Europe, so I think for one thing copyright issues aren't their priority and I also guess P isn't very famous there. IDK though how much western music was allowed under Tito back in 1984 but it's very possible that no one had ever heard of pruple Rain there back then. i agree about copyright issues. Tito was a communist leader but after turning his back to Stalin he started modeling Yugoslavia by the west standards.Everybody was listening to western music in Yugoslavia. in the late 60s maybe you had roads without concrit in some places but everybody owned a Cream,Jimi Hendrix record. Since the early 60s you had rock bands in Yugoslavia that were playing covers of hits by Animals,Stones The Beatles. After the 60s bands started doing original rock music. In the 80s you had a great new wave scene in Yugoslavia. Take a look at this, Yu synth pop band from 1983

No, that was me! Ha, should I feel guilty about posting this here? Hell no. It's 20 years past and it wasn't me covering the song. It was his risk to take. So there!

It's an obvious cover, Usually prince is credited when this happens. In a semi related matter, how many of you know this pretty good cover (prince IS credited) from 1987. The Artist is a very talented israeli jazz/rock bassist/vocalist Alon Oleartchik

The most important thing here, is that this cover is sheyite. It's a truly brilliant song, which had been awfully covered with no guts, feel or emotion. Shite!

What's the problem, I thought anyone could do a cover without permission. Isn't that why Chaka got mad? RIP
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
. Title, lyrics, credits, can't be altered without permission. . What's the Chaka story? Aside from the Melle Mel parts it was an easily identifiable cover to anyone that knew the song, or read the credits. [Edited 5/15/14 9:19am]

Very interesting. Sounds like he recorded a quite generic sounding cover of it and then fucked it up entirely (and I mean that in a good way!). I like it, thx A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/
