Band Name

I'm aware of the '3rd Eye Blind' band but does Prince still have a band that goes by 'NPG'??? If so, do you think the dude will ever lay that to rest??? Never cared for the name too much... it's weak, kinda lame and definitely nothing new about it. disbelief

He still uses the "NPG" name. It's the name for the group of musicians he uses for the funk and soul stuff (or many of his old pop classics that need more players). The girls from 3EG seem to be included in it these days (so he doesn't have a different drummer, guitarist and a bassist for those occasions). The first two songs on the Arsenio show appearance were performed with the 3EG and the last one was with the NPG.

Yes, it's quite lame by today's standards. I still remember how people thought it was cool in the early-90s. Now it sounds like a punch line from an old Pepsi commercial.

We have an electrical company over her called 'Power-Gen'. 'New power generation' sounds like a rival firm.

P has never been so brilliant when it comes to band names.

The Rebels: lame, way too obvious.

The Time: worked well but not very original.

Prince And The Revolution: one of his best choices in the context of the early 80's.

The Hookers: well at least that one was provocative enough to grab people's attention, I like the fact that it was gutsy but it was quite easy at the same time.

Vanity 6: that one was sexy enough.

Apollonia 6: lame unless you find Apollonia to be a sexy name (makes me think of a greek statue and stone is quite cold).

The Family: hard to find a more ridiculous, generic and most of it all totally unapropriated name, he almost did fDeluxe a favor by not allowing them to reuse the name. The whole notion of "family" is probably the least glamorous concept I can think of, while the band was all about glamor. Gross.

The Flesh: that one worked I guess, it was intriguing at least.

Madhouse: worked OK, but not very original and now most people think Madhouse is the name of that lame band that covered Madonna songs in the late 90's.

Prince and the New Power Generation/New Power Generation: worked well as a song concept or a supposed spiritual movement but reducing the concept to a bandname was pretty corny particularly when u think it was originally supposed to be a band that had a gangsta attitude to it.

3rdEyeGirl: I like that one, it's intriguing and I like the Indian connotation it has but it's not very original either.

I don't particularly care for the band name New Power Generation much . . . it is what it is . . . but it's made worse by constantly name-dropping them in song "NPG!" and having that acronym plastered over everything.

.

Also, even if I did love the name originally (hypothetically), to me it only applied to bandmembers in the early-to-mid 90s - ending with The Gold Experience. Once everyone was replaced for Emancipation, that name held no meaning for me anymore.

Yep, the current band resembles nothing from the original. confused

If Vanity would have accepted being called Vagina 6, that would have been interesting.

They would have been the Vagina 3...or 3rd Vagina...or 3 Vagina Lips....or

Vanity 6 refers to a nipple count, me thinks.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

3rdeyegirl is the best name he's had for a band name, which probably means he didn't come up with it. The Revolution was appropriate because the music he was making at the time was a sort of musical revolution genre-wise.

Change it one more time..
