Prince exposing different talents now? Everything seem to indicate that he's more interested in placing the spotlight on others instead of being in it.. The new look is one of his least flamboyant in his career, all the praising about his new band 3rdeyegirl, him interviewing another artist, allowing another artist to produce one of his songs.. He's coming accross more than ever as a regular person THoughts? [Edited 10/8/11 10:34am] [Edited 10/9/15 19:14pm]

I guess he just wanted to do different projects and not focus so much on himself. This Could Be Us But U Be Playin...

Wayyyyy Wayyyyy Wayyyyy Back in 1999, a little birdie said, "I kinda like you because of your mind, period." This little birdie honestly beleved and cared about some fellahs heart, health and road to eternity; therefore, yeah... celebrities are people, who need to fill the void in their spiritual peace that they forgot they had in the first place. Ain't no dollah bill gonna save your body, soul or stomach when hungry for peace. So, I tip my hat to the man taking a stand on his talent than notariety anyday! U rock on Prince bout time sir! And those sellin their souls for the illuminati? Shame on Ya cuz the devil ain't got a special love u seat for no body! wink n a prayer 2 u. Love4a1000yrs 2 Serious 4 U 2 handle...

Like the saying goes, "with age comes wisdom". It seems like Prince has become more mellow with age, and I like it. He seems happier and not as uptight as he used to be. If that's the case, I'm happy for him.

I think P still cares a lot about being considered one of the most important artists of his time but that's kinda acquired anyway: he could retire now and not ever do a thing again that he'd still be considered just that. I think he still cares about being considered a major player in the industry too, but I guess he knows he will never sell 15M copies of an album or single again too, so it's more about him maintaining a presence in the media and being recognized for still being active and creative. He's not Madonna, he's not trying to compete with Lady GaGa or Pharrell. He reportedly said in 99 that Rave would be "his next Purple Rain": I think he now gave up on that idea, he knows he won't sell that many records anymore and honestly, who cares whether he does or not? Still, allowing Josh Welton to produce his latest single may be an indication of some kind of a desire to compete the shit on the radio again (see Josh Welton's YT channel, he's doing the same exact horrible, artificial music that is successful nowadays) but the absence of a music video shows that he's not SO preoccupied by this (u don't get a true hit without a video and he knows it). But he definitely still wants to count, I think. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

It's cute that you think that. . .
Yeah nothing says lowkey like an almost pensionable 5 foot androgynous dude with a huge thining afro, giant crazy eyewear, leather waistcoat and all manner of tassles, feathers and leopard print. . .
He always bigs up his current band. Every current band is his best band ever blah, blah, blah. . .
Yeah, if you live on Neptune. . .
You got them. . . [Edited 5/9/14 3:48am]

I don't think this look is the least flamboyant in his career, from ONA-Planet Earth it's been consistanly conservative and almost the same

awww bless u!, look he's always been about the £ & the 'star' thing....signing up again with WB puts him firmly back in the spotlight & inevitably will earn him a lot more $. Even back in the 80's there was that famous quote from him 'wanting some of that Duran Duran money'! His appearance on that recent sit com, signing with WB, doing the Super Bowl, staging the TMZ thing with Bria [MEGA CRINGE!], endless celeb parties at his pad, dude the list is endless...these are not the actions of a man who doesn't want to be a star!. The thing I love about him though is that he knows he's a draw & chooses when & where to switch it on...he is so in control of it & he is very, very lucky to have that. Look at the hype here in the UK back in Feb, the UK was obsessed!

from essence magazine “I’m trying to get these women’s careers started, because they’re all so talented,” he tells me later. It’s not even about me anymore. "
That quote says it all.

What it says is exactly what I said - Prince always says this kind of stuff. Look at the NPG era interviews where he's bigging up Sonny or Renato, or Rhonda. This is what he does, he always refers to his activities as "we" - either to be humble and acknowledge that he is capstone of a larger pyramid, or just to deflect. I'm not attaching a value judgement - there's nothing wrong with it, I'm just observing - this is what he does. Apparently Andy Allo is the best thing since sliced bread, apparently he's just happy playing back-up to a great talent like Tamar. This or that incarnation of the NPG is the best ever. You see what I'm saying, he's just bigging up his current band and proud of them, it's nothing new or specific to this one act or band. . . .
He's had arguably less flaboyant looks. Emancipation and 2000-era sweaters and pants looks, Musicology zoot suits etc. YMMV, no need to get testy we're just discussing feather boas and glittered hairspray, sheesh.

Dont kid yourself. He cares every bit about being in the spotlight.
The Hit N Run in Febuary was all about free press coverage. Its more important to him now than ever before, because these days it's self-promotion rather than organised promotion. He is in Europe because Europe responds to him, puts him in the press. You know I'm right. http://www.goldiesparade.co.uk/ - Prince discography, tour history, news and more.

As for him praising other artists ya he's always done it but he's taken it to an another level with 3rdeyegirl imo. Talking about how Hannah Ford is gona turn him into a star and giving a lot of room for Donna to play solos for example, him saying in his recent interview that 3rdeyegirl they can do something Revolution couldn't which is improvise I kinda think he was serious with that magazine quote i posted.. But with him putting out his new album with Warners maybe there's a change of plans

i don't think trying to coattail young musicians who are on the upswing means you are doing them a favor or hiding from the spotlight .. if prince wasn't in it for the fame the music would be much better .. but its not .. its just sell out 'i wanna be famous' music and not genuine 'i need to express myself or i'm gonna explode' music .. prince wouldn't be paying RS to give him 4 stars on drivel like screwdriver and breakfast can wait .. and he wouldn't be promoting his albums on his tshirts all the time like a walking billboard .. prince only does music for the fame .. no other reason .. otherwise he would release something great .. something with passion .. something he can be proud of .. prince rides trends whether its rap ... jazz or a return to rock music .. it's not about the music or doing something no one has done before .. it's about prince keeping his name in the papers and do you REALLY think he just wants ZOEY DESCHANEL to have a great music career and thats why he did a single with her? HELL NO .. her career is on the upswing and his is on the downswing .. cheap publicity .. cheap music and it is for HIS benefit .. not hers .. this is why prince fans hate prince .. he is such a fucking sell out it is sickening .. when he could just work on some good music for a change .. its about the fame with him

What's funny is he will do all kinds of things looking like he wants to be a big star, but then fumbles and bumbles his way to keep from making more money and can't even begin to understand how to organize a tour..
1: Tickets to club shows way overpriced 2: Makes said tickets way cheaper, and even free at the last minute, so said club isn't 50% empty, to avoid it looking like he can't sellout. 3. Doing that strange ritual most other artists do where you have tour dates months in advance with tickets onsale around 45 days or more before the show. 4. Kind of back to point #2: Having unclear and very inconsistent fluctuations in the prices to see him live...like during the recession in 2011, where the only shows the south got in North and South Carolina, areas of a really weak economy...making tickets so overpriced that some of the shows had 4,000 or more empty seats, and then having all those shows in a much better economy in Los Angeles for $19... 5. Not having anything close to a tour in the United States other than the last minute things that older people with deep responsibilities just can't handle. Ever try to get a day off from some ruthless Corporate American company? From 1999 to 2014, Musicology was the only large scale tour he has had that had anything close to an organized lengthy schedule.
You can't possibly conclude that the Welcome to Oakland or Welcome 2 San Francisco tours helped him that much. Prince built up a great reputation live, and he easily could have milked it for a lot more money over the years. Problem is, he probably wants to, but his batSH*@ mentality has kept him from doing it right. [Edited 5/9/14 9:34am]

While i completely disagree that he's not interested in being a big star, I do think you're onto something here. It reminds me of what people said about Miles Davis in the 80's; about how he was just interested in playing good music and was a fairly chilled and friendly to work with in comparison to the nightmare from before.

I think he cares more than ever, he's just making mature choices, and it's paying off. Maybe seeing Sly Stone come back, MJ's death, (neither handled well) and a few other situations, had an effect on him. The flipside is he's using social media, working with past enemies, acting humble. It's jus a ndw strategy, but Prince is numero uno and self serving at all times. Also the New Girl kind of shows he's thinking about himself as much as ever.

> I hate to agree with this but... The obvious fact is if he were true to himself, if he got back to what made him HIM in the first place, he would most likely have that fame that he wants. Back in the day it seemed like all of his major stuff was out of left field, even "Purple Rain" could be considered batsh!t crazy compared to other blockbusters. "Kiss", his psychedelic period, "1999's" double album extended dance pop confections, are all testaments of a man courting fame on his OWN terms. It seems that he lost that as he left the 80's and had all that drama with Warners (for which he's mostly to blame). But the 80's is his period, just like the 70's is Stevie's and the 60's is The Beatles. But with the Prince "sound" everywhere, he's the most capable of having a comeback more than anyone.

I dont know if Prince is less interested in being a big star than he ever was. Otherwise he wouldnt do the recent publicity excercises he has done recently, such as Arsenio and New Girl.
What I do notice though, is that he seems more at ease with himself and more relaxed then in previous years. For the first time in quite a few years, Prince actually looks like he is having fun being Prince again, and this has shown in his recent music releases, and his appearances on TV.
Perhaps he has just found his inner peace and is enjoying life.
