Children I can understand (giving an example and shit) but WOMEN???

Taking for granted that cursing in front of (not at) people is a lack of respect towards them (I'm not even sure of that but let's say it's our premise):

Does it mean that we men don't need to respect each other because we can curse when no women are around?

Does it also mean that women can curse in front of men and therefore have no need to respect them.

Or maybe Prince believes women never curse at all?

I'm not sure whether this statement is too feminist (women are holy) or a bit misogynystic (women can't handle bad words more than children)... actually I suspect it's a bit of both... Prince and the eternal contradictions between his feminist side and his Morris Day side I guess...

Not too start an "let's bitch at Prince" thread, it's just that I like to be picky with the actual MEANING of words and the messages they convey, and I was shocked by this statement.

There is a theocratic oder, you know. First comes god, then man, and finally women. Or something like that, I don't care. Prince's mind is twisted for a long time, we shouldnt care too much about what he says.

Cursing in front of people is not being disrespectful at all IMO but being honest and healthy. I am a woman and if a man curses in font of other men but not in front of me I consider that as very disrespectful.

We have a rarely enforced law in Michigan that states exactly that....no cursing in front of women and children. Misdemeanor penalty.

Oh lordie, you misunderstoof the quote, but either way, the idea of elevating women and children with extra courtesy, as in "women and children first" or the idea that you should protect and provide your most moral self to them, is nothing new. It's actually pretty antiquated. It's a chivalrous concept. Is this really something anyone here needs spelled out for them? Now equating feminism with treating women as holy is straight up lunacy, or ignorant. Either way, it suggests this topic isn't for you, and has nothing to do with Prince.

Agreed. This is nothing new and people are reading way too much into it. Prince is only a couple of years older than me and this is simply the way most of us were raised at the time. People didn't speak a certain way in mixed company and parents had these silly notions about teaching us manners.

There were certain things that were not said in "polite" company or around kids. My parents did not cuss in front of us and we actually got sent out of the room if an adult topic came up. I know that sounds quaint now but it was the norm when Prince and I were kids.


So maybe Prince is returning to the lessons he was taught as a youngster before the "anything goes" era was upon us. A whole lot of people do that as time passes.
