What I always heard was he saw a headline in on a Sunday news paper and by the end of the day the song was done. However, PrinceVault says it was recorded on a Tuesday.

But anyway there may be deeper songs but none ever affected me so much as that one. I remember hearing it was coming out! So I made trips to the record store and looked then asked. Finlay one day I walk in and the dude says "hey bro..." and he holds up the single...and said "okay..." and then he kind of shakes it...And I see PRINCE! And all i can say is "12 inch" and pulls it out of the box! He said "I think we are supposed to wait till tomorrow....but how can I say no"

We talked about the cover if it was prince or not. Anyway... the drive home seemed long.

I carefully cut the plastic as to leave it on the but get the record out. I put it on side A...and drop the needle.... and i swear i felt like i was falling into the music...i got kind of a vertigo feeling and felt like i was falling...falling slowly falling... i think i played it 10 times or more before i flipped it over...

It's a pretty basic song. I would say not 'deep' at all. The song is just a simple list of things that were perceived as problems of that time. The music was deeper than the lyrics by far. The lyrics are pretty basic, I would say. Nothing wrong with simple communication. No hate for the song. It's good but I don't think it is nor do I think it was meant to be some mystical thing.
