I always thought the ultimate transition was his appearance at Shiela E's Warfield dates (and video shoot for Love Bizarre) when he showed up with shorter hair and a loose fitting trench without studs, black Ray Bans instead of the Lennon shades, and the crop top shirt design, plus the transition in purple to a more pastel shade that looked more raspberry.

But laid out, it looks like he defaulted to the short hair and a trench look a lot.... and if those pics are dated right, I'm surprised he kept going back to the Robin Williams' pleated pants until Purple Rain.

That wasn't transitional, it was his full parade look. It was the Christopher Tracy overcoat coat (not a trench coat), Kiss shades, Cherry Moon hair and the Parade crop top and bottoms which he had in every colour of the rainbow.

I guess I consider it transitional because it was 3 months before Under the Cherry Moon came out, and 6 months before the Parade tour, and that was the first time (or close to it) the general public saw him out of his Purple Rain/ATWD look. I guess you're right it was a fully realized costume, but to me it was also a transition into him doing an almost Morris Day look, with the silk suits, double breasted lapels, wide ties that he'd go back to in some form with the Versace years. All just a stop over before Sign of the Times.
