Funny, to me it doesn't flow naturally at all. It sounds like it's one of the first tracks he did after his "recording hiatus" and still had huge problems in that regard. "FixUrLifeUp" also drags a bit too much to my ears, but I consider it an improvement over RnRLA at least.

Fixurlifeup sounds more "alternative" and maybe it's a bit more flashy. But I feel like the lyrics are totally forced and the sound is fairly generic. I don't really get what the "band of boys" and the mysogynistic music business has to do with fixing your life up. The Go Gos had personal problems, too!

The lyrics are silly and weird, which I like, but not silly and weird in a very profound way. I think the chorus is like a placeholder, not something he should have really settled upon.

When I first heard R&R Love I thought there was nothing to it. It has no real hook, no special sound, but something about it strikes a genuine emotional chord in me. But believe me, I do understand when someone says they don't like it!

RNRLA did not stand out much to me at the very beginning, but after listening to it several times it connected, and then I really started to enjoy it. I think it took a while for me to warm up to this song because of its Country flavor, which is an acquired taste for me as I rarely listen to Country music. So I needed the hear the song several times through to develop an appreciation for the full range of sound contained in the composition's melange of musical influences.

So now I quite like RNRLA as well as the extended version, but I remain bit partial to Remix 7, which I connected with right off the bat on first listen.

Oh, yeah. The lyrics of "FixUrLifeUp" make me cringe too. It's just been interesting to me to observe how Prince's skills as a songwriter / arranger / producer have developed after his "hiatus" (he himself stated that he didn't do much recording anymore around 2010-11). RnRLA sounds like he was really rusty at the time and he's been "rediscovering" how music should be properly written and arranged again. RnRLA, to me at least, sounds like layers of sound on top of each other without much of an interaction between the parts. From someone that's done masterful arrangements throughout his life it just sounded, well, amateurish. The type of a recording someone that's been doing music on his PC for maybe 1-2 years would come up with.

But this is the fairest assessment of it I've heard about it. The layer bit hits the nail on the head. Layer interaction is what prince is very much about. Melodies swapping ships 3-4 times a line, the piano filling for a drum line, a snare and hat chiming in on a guitar lead line. These things seem very much not there.


However...I chalked it up to him working with a new group and relavibr NEW musicians...Donna and Hannah r so very young and VERY new to prince as band mates(maybe friends). I figured he was ramping up the musicianship aspect of his tunes for their sake so they could participate in the creative process...fix...LOL..rnrla screw. They're all simple, but screw and rnrla were simple AND effective(IMO). They seem to have learned a lot and I figure the album won't sound nearly as amateurish. Its been a couple years.

Pretzel, though many dislike it, doesn't sound amateurish...loose, but not amateurish. Plus, I think he finally pulled of a 'wooooh!!' In a songs intro appropriately. He tried and failed several times over the last 3-4 years. Kinda like cream's pulsing organ... he tried that a couple times before he nailed it in cream
