Completely irrational but.. Damn it I wish I had been my age in 1979. To have had the chance to watch Prince's career first hand and not through old videos and stories of those of you lucky enough to have been there. Yeah, he has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, I actually remember my parents arguing in the car when I was like 5 because my mom wanted to play Thriller and my dad wanted to play Purple Rain, lol but I didn't appreciate him as much as I should have until my teenage years. Sometimes watching the 8.3.83 show I feel so sad knowing it was 31 years ago and that that Prince is gone forever. I love every single era but I would love to be able to start back at the beginning. Tell me I'm not crazy. Everybody stop on the 1...GOOD GOD! Uhh!

You're not crazy
Sometimes the connection with the vibe of a certain artist or with the art of a certain time and place can be really strong. If you haven't seen the movie, "Midnight in Paris," it's about this sort of feeling (although with literature instead of music) and is exceptionally well made. The Beach Boys song (really just Brian Wilson solo) "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times" is also a beautiful expression of the same mindset. So, plenty of creative, artistic, sensitive people have this same sort of feeling. That said, I do think we're all exactly where we're meant to be, even if that's not always clear to us as we go through life.

UGH you were 17 in 1983.. I would kill. I had just turned 2 when PR came out. I missed it all. =( lol So were you a big fan from the beginning? [Edited 3/16/14 22:32pm] Everybody stop on the 1...GOOD GOD! Uhh!

I have always felt like I was stuck in the wrong era. I have a very difficult time identifying with much of anything my friends or even my husband enjoy (as far as entertainment goes). Makes it really frustrating, especially with my husband who doesn't really like Prince, or any music I do. Everybody stop on the 1...GOOD GOD! Uhh!

I know it's hard being a young fan; missing out on the zeitgeist of the times, but try being 14 in 84 and missing the 1999 tour cuz ur too young and missing the PR tour cuz no one in ur family thought to take u. Oh and how about making a whole mess of friends that were in high school with u that were P fans, having UnderTheCherryMoon bomb, and having no chance to see the Parade tour with said friends? Sniff sniff sobb sobb ..maybe it's better that you were too young. Of course I made up for all that in the late 80s-90s ,. but I feel ur pain. That all being said, my favorite Prince concert experience came in the form of the One Night Alone tour at the Kodak theater in LA. My gf and I waited in line all day in Hollywood and everybody stopped and asked "omg, who are you waiting to see?" Luckily, we were like 50th in line, and got 3rd row center seats. After years of nosebleeds and shitty seats thanks to ticketmaster, It was the best feeling in the world to have Prince so close we could almost touch him. I looked him in the eye and he threw a tamborine to my girl! I remember looking back at 99% of the rest of the crowd and thought that It wouldn't get any better than this! Your time will come young Padawan. [Edited 3/16/14 23:30pm]

Ha! Well I suppose I can see your side of it, but hey, you still got Purple Rain on the big screen and the videos on MTV when MTV was actually cool. Why couldn't you see the Parade Tour? I think UTCM didn't do well because people took it too seriously.. I have watched it lots of times and to me, the comedy between Christopher and Tricky is obvious but everyone took it as bad acting. If you try to watch it from a comedic POV the movie is really fun and enjoyable. The only issue with that, though, is the scene where he dies.. I wanted to take it serious but Tricky was doin the MOST and I couldn't help but laugh. Everybody stop on the 1...GOOD GOD! Uhh!

What was neat for me is that I became a Prince fan AFTER the Purple Rain zeitgeist. Was not into PR at all, at 12 years old I was jamming to Wham! and any number of other Brit bands. I knew all my friends at school loved the Purple Rain phenomenon but it didn's move me. What I did like was 1999 which I stole from my sister and played it non-stop and by the time Raspberry Beret came out I was somehow a bigger fan than my sister who moved on. And then I went back from For You on and bought each tape and kind of recreated the experience from the beginning. Being around in a time when there was a buzz for each new Prince single came out (even if the albums became less and less commercial phonemenons) was an awesome time indeed. All good things they say never last...

I agree. To be in Minneapolis during the Purple Rain era must have been phenomenal.
The one that always gets me is the concerts that Prince did (I think Controversy/1999 era) with Zapp & Roger and The Time on the same bill. |

I know, I can only imagine how exciting it must have been to be part of the club scene in Minneapolis at that time.. everything was just cooler back then..
I, admittedly don't know TOO much of Zapp's music, but to witness "More Bounce to the Ounce" live the same night as anything Prince and The Time were doing.. EPIC is the only word that comes to mind.
It's awesome you were able to see the HIStory, tour. As much as I love the DVD of that show, I can imagine actually being there in person would have been life changing.

Great thread! I was born in 1980, but I have fond memories of the early '80s, especially listening to Purple Rain over and over on vinyl when I was 4, and at 5 going absolutely crazy for my 45-rpm Raspberry Beret with She's Always in My Hair on the flipside!
The '80s were FULL of great music, both from Prince and in general. ā€ˇhttps://www.youtube.com/@PurpleKnightsPodcast

About 5 is the earliest I remember, but even though it was '87 my dad was still spinning PR all the time. I think a little later he got ATWIAD and SOTT, but it might have just been the singles. I wish my memory was better. I'm just glad someone in my life was smart enough to play the good stuff!
And yes, the 80's was the best decade for music, hands down. Prince, MJ, Madonna (can't stand her anymore though), Janet, Whitney, G-n-R.. so glad my parents were young and cool. lol Everybody stop on the 1...GOOD GOD! Uhh!

There is definitely a certain magic to being there at the beginning of something special.
I remember reading an article by a music/arts critic that was written maybe 40-50 years after the fact, in which he reminsced about a show he was assigned to review at the very beginning of his career. (I wish I could remember who the critic was, so I could look this up online... if it is even online, as I know I read it in print, years ago.) The show featured a young jazz pianist who wasn't well known at the time, and the critic felt rather put out at having to travel to wherever the show was and spend his evening this way. For whatever reason(s), he ended up there early, just in time to see the (also unknown) stand-up comic who was the "warm-up" act. Then Woody Allen performed his stand-up routine, followed by Bill Evans playing the piano. According to the critic, he wandered out of the club in a sort of daze afterwards, unsure if he had really just seen the level of talent he thought he had, and generally unsure what the hell what was going on. A couple of years later, everybody knew. That story has really stuck with me for some reason.

Uhm... Okay... I saw Zapp with Roger live once on the no longer running Drum Rhythm Festival in Amsterdam in 96 or 97 and found it a big disappointment. Good guitarist, but every other minute they went: Somebody say yeah! Now where's the party people at? Somebody screeeaam! They just waaaay overdid the show elememt and the music suffered.
I've been into Prince since Lovesexy and yes, it was an exciting time to be a fan. Lovesexy was a failure in the US, but a BIG hype in Europe and it got me hooked until now! I have no nostalgic feelings for times past, although, seeing James Brown in his younger days or the late great Jimi or Marvin...yeah, that woulda been cool. [Edited 3/17/14 17:43pm]

I'm 43. And when I was a child all I heared was Boney M and Abba. There's always been commercial shit music and good music. (I didn't hear Miles or Zappa on the radio back then!) The great thing about Prince was that he was artistic and commercial at the same time. [Edited 3/17/14 18:05pm]

I feel blessed to have been 14 in 1984 that's for sure. But there is music from the 60's that i'm jealous i wasn't around for too.
I'm thankful i was in to Prince and MJ then went on to listen to their idols and label mates too.
Jimi, James, Miss Ross, Stevie, Marvin, Sly etc all are favourites of mine thanks to their words of wisdom. I may even like some of those more these days to be honest.

I get that. I think if I could pick another time in music to revisit I would go back and see Ike and Tina, Sony an Cher, Jackson 5, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight & the Pips.. the 70's were pretty epic, too.

IDK how old u r but admitting u were 5 in about 1985 that means u were born in about 1980, so u'd need to have been born in about 1945 to be your age in 1979. Believe me u DON'T want to have been born in 1945: even Prince ain't worth that shit! A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/
