Joy in Repetition on ONA

I've been listening to this track from the "It Ain't Over" CD have to say that it should be right up there as a classic performance. Next to Beautiful Strange at the House of Blues in L.A, I feel that this is the best guitar work that I've heard from Prince. I find that Larry Graham's bass work, however, is too busy during Prince's solos, especially during his long run near the end. I am certainly not a Larry Graham hater, but just feel that he could have held off on the dynamics a bit.

I am not one to say that one guitarist is better than another, but there is something about Prince's sound that is unique from any other guitarists that I've heard. His work can be extraordinarily beautiful (Joy in Repetition) to extremely passionate (I Hate U). I just wish that he would let his guitar loose a bit more on his studio recordings.

Peace.

Yep, me agrees with everything you said. After this long lick that he plays during the second solo, he REALLY lets loose!
Lots of effects, distortion and wahwah and it works perfectly here.

the whole "you 'bout to hear *insert band member name here* play "joy in repetition". it just gets on my fucking nerves. it fucks with the song TOO much, and sounds quite corny.
now i know what this is all about. now i know exactly what i am.

Anyone else remember when a band would play a gig and ONCE towards the end of the show, showcase the individuals in the band...introduce them...let them solo a bit, etc...

AHHH the good ol days
I'm firmly planted in denial

my fave Prince track this is.

i never tire of it...so sexy,so musically sensational...& larry's bass i LOVE!
yeah its busy during P's solos but it sounds right 4 me.

tho there r 2 overdubs on this track:

"live music, from the band they sing it" ...or sumthin like that,...was added after.
on the original bootleg,he actually messed up the lyric, but it sounded cool the way it was off the cuff...

also the synth that comes in now & then was added in post-production.
but doesn't ruin the song, infact it helps it (which is odd for an overdub)

10/10

The biggest overdub on the set is on this track - right after Prince says "u about 2 hear Larry Graham play Joy in Repetition" the crowd give their loudest most audible cheer, surpassed only by Prince's name check.

Now I havent heard the bootleg, but I'm guessing that Prince is being economical with the actualities here

This performance is worth owning the set, IMO. When I first heard it, I didn't listen to the whole thing because I thought Prince was doing another short version of a song, so I took it off. One day, I had the CD playing in the car, and when I realized that, after he played that first solo, he went back to singing, I was thrilled beyond belief. I am actually enjoying this version better than the album version.

No matter what your favorite version of this song is, 2 see him perform that version live at the Roseland was still mindblowing*

Take that back, the whole nite concert/after-show was mind blowing...heavy dose of Prince that day. If I'm lying then 12 trax from Portland would not B representing so strong on ONA...
