Why Are Peeps So Concerned With Hits?

I see a lot of people talking about ''Prince has next big hit'' and y'all posted all the itunes charts with Breakfest Can Wait. It's starting to look like an MJ, Janet, Rihanna, or Beyonce fan site. MJ, Rihoe, Janet and Mariah fans are obsessed with stats. And what does that actually say about the music? NOT A DAMN THING

Prince has always been innovative in his music. And beyond Purple Rain never had a ''huge'' album per say. Sure he had hits here and there pre and post Purple Rain. But he wasn't selling huge numbers and at one time didn't want to. Remember this is the guy who came out with Around The World In A Day out of nowhere. This was a pre itunes and twitter era. Way before i was born... he wanted the album to be heard for the entire concept. Not one song... and he wasn't caring about the charts. So the fans shouldn't care either shrug

Prince hasn't had a hit since 1996. He probably will never have another hit. And that's fine, cause hits and numbers don't mean shit in the long run. Let the little short mofo make his crappy songs... and sometimes good songs. And not worry about the charts. It's all about the music anyways.

I agree. I want him to be able to chart for my own selfishness. Maybe I feel like he will keep working if he sees he can still record what the people want to hear, but I should remember that, even if he never writes again we will always have his music.

I think you're right about him not caring.. if he did, he wouldn't release albums for free with magazines. Sure he got compensated but he had to know they wouldn't chart. (Even though there are several tracks on 20ten I feel were amazing and chartable)

White people don't accept black music nowadays. Only if it's pop friendly. Real urban artists don't have a chance anymore There's no black artists on the top 40 anymore. Hasn't been for years...

How many white folk have you interviewed about their musical preferences? I would imagine the label and which career they decide to put more effort into has more to do with who is successful than what the white listener prefers.

Just noticed you are the one that commented that Prince needs to quit messing with light girls.. I guess these two posts show where you stand as far as race goes so I might as well be done with this conversation.

Beyonce:
On Pink
I missed Gaga’s [performance] because I was trying to hurry up and get ready for the performance because I was next. When I came back in I saw the end of Pink’s. Which looked UNBELIEVABLE. She is INCREDIBLE. She’s so strong. She’s a gymnast and she’s so eloquent and singing all at the same time. I know how difficult that is and I have so much respect for her.

This is such a ridiculous question I won't even waste any more of my time looking or further proof. I know black people that like both of them.. done with this now.

His music is timeless and there is so much! smile he is one artist, who, even if i don't like everything. I can never say he didn't use all his talents. He has hundreds and hundreds of songs. One more hit in my opinion won't help or hurt his career.

BOTH! Prince is all colors music biggrin i recall a documentary (i think it was from 1992, saw it on youtube) where they said he wanted Bobby Z as drummer over another guy. Because he wanted a mixed race band. He wanted a Sly & The Family Stone type band. Mixed people, colorless music (In a good way)

This will break stonelove heart bheart

I personally couldn't care less about Prince having another hit. What I do find intriguing though is his apparent inability to achieve one in the last 15 years (and that's being generous, his last real hit was 1994, 20 years ago).

I think it's obvious that Prince wants another hit record, but for some reason it ain't happening for him....

I read this hours ago and have thought about it on and off yet I got nothin'. I think sometimes people reach a level of fame where fans are just used to them being there and inadvertanly take the fact that they are still working for granted. Kwim? It's hard to understand. I wouldn't for a second say it's due to a lack of quality material because, over the years, there have been tracks I felt should have been big for him but weren't. confused

When Prince has a HIT song... = "oh great, yes how cool, Prince is amazing", please admit that is your reaction.. we are "so proud" of his achievements when it happens (not often the past many years)... wink

When Prince misses, when he is far away from the hitlists = "oh that doesn't matter, hitlsts sucks anyway"..

the reason why most of us want Prince to be on the hitlists, it's simply - "we want Prince to be successful".... in our own -- and in other people's eyes.

Right or wrong. The hitlists is a way to define "success".

Last year RNRLA had it's arse kicked on BBC radio 2 for about 3 months but didn't even sniff the top 100 singles, was it a hit? Is there a way of finding out his many copies it sold? Download or CD. smile

let's be clear....Prince wants to have a hit single.Remember that interview from last year, when he was whining about radio not playing his recent singles? Prince is starving for a hit single. The only problem is,he wants a hit single on his own terms. He's not always willing to play the game.

Doesn't make too much sense to go for insubstantial pop music whout the prospect of it becoming popular or a hit.

Personally, it's not going to make or break Prince's career or turn the world on its axis if Prince has another hit. But for whatever reason I have always been a chart guy...I don't equate quality with hit status but I have always found it cool to follow the Top 10, Top 20, Top 50 etc. I used to memorize Billboard charts, not bragging, it was just one of my things. And I used to love getting the new issue of Billboard right when it came out so I could see where the latest Prince album or single was charting. This got to be less and less fun as the 90s went on but this was before the Internet, and when the charts still kind of meant something. So yeah I have always enjoyed when Prince had a high charting hit, if nothing else because it was cool to see the masses appreciate something that the man did. Now the big deal would be could Prince, who has basically achieved the living legend status of a Paul McCartney or an Eric Clapton, score a hit single next to Lorde and Imagine Dragons and Pitbull. It doesn't really matter if he does but wouldn't it be neat if he did?

lets get this straight...prince doesnt "need" another hit..he is already a music legend...but he "wants" a hit record..this is clear from what he has said in interviews..there are a number of reasons why he would like another hit..probably not least a f.u to all the people who turned their back on him when he went independent back in 96 and radio stopped playing his songs..

now the problem he has is his fanbase dont really download mp3 tracks in any great number...they still buy actual albums in good numbers..but they dont buy these downloads which are needed nowadays to have a hit...the only way prince will have a hit is if he can get the younger people who do buy these downloads to purchase his mp3's...and the only way that his going to happen is doing exactly what in has done..release something catchy with a popular figure who appeals to the younger generation..its a very dumbed down track for prince but his really good stuff would never appeal to a mass audience so this throwaway track is what might appeal to kids who decide what is in the charts...

it might not work but i really feel if this doesnt chart then prince will never have another hit record...but he has had more than just about anyone else so its no big deal for me..

That's a fair shout, we just need the radio to actually play it, radio 2 hasn't played it since the first time on Friday. Hopefully it'll make a playlist tomorrow

People are interested in Prince having a hit/popularity because it then justifies their choice of artist and in turn justifies themself to others. It's a weakness of mankind: concerned with how we are seen as opposed to being true to our self.
