what if Prince had played "the game"? A thought experiment - I think it's fair to say the music business underwent a number of fundamental changes in the eighties. The one that interests me is the move from artists generally releasing an album per year to a slower schedule. Most of my favourite artists in any medium seem to have a compulsion to work (be it Prince, Ryan Adams or, out with music, Woody Allen).
So, my question is if, after Purple Rain, Prince's career path had been to only release the follow albums and accompanied each with a major world tour:
1987 - SOTT
1991 - D&P
1995 - TGE
1997 - The Truth
1999 - The Hits (obviously out of chronological order from the actual release but I suppose this history imagines a more harmonious relationship with WB and the release of it to co-incide with, erm, 1999 the song)
2004 - Musicology
2009 - Lotus Flower
2014 - PlectrumElectrum
Would Prince's critical and commercial standing be better?
More interestingly (for me at least) would "fans" have been happier with this less is more approach?

The fact that you bring up Woody Allen says everything. He is over 70 and releases a new film every year. And he has a tremendous reputation in the movie bizz.

Besides, you don't really think The Truth would work as a new album now, wouldya?

Why not? I suppose I was kind of thinking of the career path of someone like U2, who although not a particular favourite of mine seem to have carved out a career for themselves! In this scenario The Truth is Zooropa to The Gold Experience's Achtung Baby!!!! I included it as I feel it shows a different facet to Prince - although not an absolute favourite of mine it does contain some excellent material and even the lesser tracks are interesting and, due to the way it was released with the Crystal Ball (am I legally required to say fiasco), probably his most ( and least deserving to be )- over-looked work.

I thought u meant, "the game," as in the movie of that title. That would be HILARIOUS, seeing Prince get caught up in all those shenanigans. And in the end, seeing Duane DRAMATICALLY fake his own death and Prince end up wearing a 'drugged and left for dead in Mexico and all I got was this T-shirt' T-shirt. U think it'd make him more of a 'people person'?
