I agree that Around the World in a Day and Parade felt less like a Prince record and more of a cohesive band effort. Pop Life is a great example.
.
Back then after the split with the Revolution I was bummed because I felt the best was yet to come from them. It was like they were just at the peak of things. I just assumed that Prince felt like he was losing control or his identity and pulled the plug. Back then we did not have the internet and there wasn't much info about the split. So really there was only speculation at the time.
.
In retrospect I understand he needed to move on and somewhat glad he did. I just wished they would have had just one more album together.
.
Ironically since then he has kept people around him much longer than he needed to. This is where I agree with some that he keeps people around nowadays that don't challenge him. Sure he has worked with some top notch musicians that are better drummers, guitarist etc. than some of the Revolution. I just think the Revolution/Wendy & Lisa brought out the best of his songwriting in general.
I don't think it was time to move on yet. Especially because a lot of that was emotional decisions not 'musical' direction. Because if U think about it, SOTT is just Dream Factory. Most of the music during that time came out of the Dream Factory 1985/86 period. Including RockHardInA FUnky Place. SOTT wasnt music he created with the official SOTT band (excluding Dr Fink, Eric Leeds, Matt Blisten) Even Eye No(Lovesexy) is a full Revolution band jam(Ball) from the Dream Factory sessions. And even a lot of the GBridge music was from the 1986 Dream Factory sessions-not the 1990 NPG formulation.
.
Just from the 1984-1986 years if u look at the boots and what was released later, there were no less than 6 albums worth of music. I think he was just getting into a settling maturing sound and style.
.
But it is what it is now. |

I have an idea in my head for a music video. He could have made a really great video for the song! maybe it's cause i'm in the youtube generation and all. But i can't see a major artist not making a video for a top 10 single. In this day and age...
And music videos were important in the 80's and 90's. It's crazy how some stars had a huge hit with video intact. Then had another hit... with no video. This fool did a videof or Paisley Park, but not Pop Life Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I heard it today on lunch break. It doesn't get as much play as When Doves Cry, Purple Rain, Kiss, 1999, Little Red Corvette etc. But... too me it is the perfect revolution single.
Lyrically it is Prince at his best. Talking about social issues, personal issues, issues of race, gender etc. Wendy & Lisa on backing vocals, the funky bass, the ''pops'' this song embodied everything great about Prince with the revolution.
lyrically, musically, and vocally. Too me it's one of the songs where you can feel the whole bands input. On a lot of revolution era songs i just hear Prince influence in a lot of it. Hear everyone comes together to create a short but incredible work.
At least that's my take it on it. What do y'all think?
Oh yeah!, I'm feeling me some "Pop Life"......
Best song too blare hecka loud cruising down the highway
I LOVE this song!!!!!!!........
........."Life it ain't real funky, unless it's got that "POP"............... |

Initially his idea was not to have any videos or promotion for Around the World in a Day. He was also saying things like he'd never tour again til he found the ladder. Maybe that was his intention at the moment but I'm sure Warner Bros had a say in the matter too.
.
Obviously as with NEVER playing 1999 again after the year 1999 it was all just Prince talk. "Hey, I got the butta 4 ya muffin, honey.. I'm just 2 old 2 hold the knife!" |

But once Raspberry Beret came out and received an award for best video... I would say it would be a good idea to do videos lol that Paisley Park video was nothing, just like the SOTT video, ATWIAD was the album to promo the hell out of, too colorful and different not to
.
Didn't he stop playing it for a long time though? Like the first time was the Coachella show? 2007? |

pop life is one of my faves that never gets old .. always happy to hear that song
as for pr and 1999 sounding like prince records .. lets not forget the huge drop off in quality starting with lovesexy .. sure there were some old ideas that surfaced later as some of his best songs ... but the time when revolution members were present produced the finest music ever .. and after they were gone prince music hit the stinker .. he only shone bright when new collaborators came along that had talent .. like rosie
the reason pr and 1999 sound like solo records is because A prince would lift ideas from his band and play all the parts himself and B the drum machine made it easy to keep a somewhat static prince sound that he could recreate live and in the studio with consistancy.
someone mentioned pr being about a BAND and that is why they got undue credit .. well prince whole career was about presenting a ONE MAN BAND who does it all himself as the selling point .. this was not the case and prince took much undue credit to propagate said myth of doing it all himself .. with a drum machine based sound it was much easier for prince to recreate the jams with his band all by himself
don't forget prince had a BAND from the start .. many musicians whom he took ideas from to create his songs and MAKE THEM BETTER .. if prince did it on his own the quality drop would not have been so huge after he disbanded the revolution.
pop life is great!! would not have been so great without the revolution around to shape it .. no doubt .. lets get those noses out of that purple starfish |

Pop Life is PERFECT for the time period right after and still in the Purple Reign, I always see this album as a kind of reflection period of sorts
Old Friends 4 Sale, Pop Life, Hello perfect songs that give some kind of interconnected experience of 1985 |

Lets' take a look at Prince's development as a dancer for comparison. Before Lisa came onboard, Prince just jutted around on stage like a Mick Jagger tribute act with arthritis. Really simplistic. With the 1999 tour he started to demonstrate the showmanship he became known for. Of course by then Lisa was a key member of the band. Then Wendy joined and Prine's dancing started to show a new level of style and finesse, with a great range of cultural references. His dancing reached a peak on the Parade tour. Take a look at the Stockholm show on that tour. Fantastic! Of course his dancing was still pretty classy on the SOTT tour, but let's keep in mind - Prince was still under the INFLUENCE of W&L. On the Lovesexy tour we start seeing signs of a drop in quality. Certainly from the 90's onwards it's all rather depressing. Prince chasing trends, even to the point of including hip hop elements in his choreography. It's clear to me that W&L made Prince the great dancer we remember from the 80's!

lol
I actually hate the dancing he started doing on GB/Nude tour, like in the Theives In the Temple video. I love those authentically Prince moves like on the 1999 tour, Possessed live, the Parade tour, those theatric moves on Christophe Tracey's Parade

My point is simply that a sudden drop in quality doesn't really, by it self, say much about the influence of those who were around during an artists creative peak.
If you watch live videoes from those days, you will see a man who is bursting with creativity in everything he does, also in ways that could not possibly have been influenced by his band. As you say - nobody in his band could dance. Prince could. Some people are lucky to be around at the right time. The wooh is on the one! |

I know what you are saying.
.
But the energy around him and the excitement generated in his camp all around can cause a man to dance better lol whether literal or figurative
.
I of course, totally agree it had to do with the inspiration around him. Jill Jones, Vanity, Lisa Coleman, Susannah Melvoin Susan Moonsie, Brenda Bennett, Sheila E,Cat Wendy Melvoin, Sheena Easton Also Prince has said he's always got along better with women, because me tend to be more emotionally closed. up till 1986 he had a lot of inspirational women around him. after 1989 it was mostly men for a long time. And I don't think Rosie gave the inspiration others did, she was really only going to be there for a paycheck and get back to her solo career. And Diamonds & Pearls... uh probably not. Mayte wasn't even a Prince fan when she joined his band. |

Yup, they created an enviroment that allowed Prince to flourish as an artist in ways that really suited his artistic temperament. He explored aspect of his creativity that he has rarely revisited. We agree on that The wooh is on the one! |

I need to hear the 7 minute version shockingly i haven't heard it yet...
seriously? How about the extended version of Hello?
Nope! man, i have hundreds of Prince songs on my ipod. Yet never heard those. This is why being a Prince fan is so fun. Always so much to discover. Forget about the i-pod, start collecting RECORDS! Am I to assume U never heared the 10 minute version of La La La He He Hee either? That I do have! I got about 6 prince records too. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener
