Most likely production assistance / drum tracking / keys kinda like Kirky J used to do for a few of Prince's tracks in the 90's.

Change it one more time..

Great song. I agree it does sound like a remix at times.

Trying to imagine a 3rd eye version of this.

could it work.

Didn't Wendy and Lisa write a bunch of songs that Prince eventually took credit for? "The Stick" comes to mind offhand, as does "Mountains":

"Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman composed the music, and brought it to Prince. He composed the lyrics, but claimed sole credit for the song upon its release." (Princevault)

Kinda catchy, although the accompanying music isn't that much to my liking.

i know, that's what i was thinking: he did the beat and general structure and prince just

filled it in with lyrics and everything else.

remember, he just reworked a tune Donna wrote and it's now the title track to his new

album.

Wendy and Lisa did not write "The Stick". Wendy wasn't even working with Prince at the time. Lisa came up with a lyric that inspired the concept of the song. Lisa confirmed this to me on Twitter.

My bad -- should've known better than to say Wendy had a hand in writing The Stick.

Huh, the way that's written in Princevault makes it seem that Prince didn't do anything else on "Mountains" than the lyrics. I can easily recall W&L stating that they admired what Prince did with the arrangements of the song. That's really what makes "Mountains" what it is in the end. I have no problem believing the melody wasn't exactly his as at least the chorus is quite different from his usual stuff.

My CD copy of Parade doesn't seem to state anything else than that the entire record was "Written, composed, arranged and produced by Prince and The Revolution". Don't know what was stated on the LP release or the single. I wouldn't say he claimed "sole credit" for the song if he credited the entire record to the band.

This is quite telling. Lisa comes up with a line that's not even part of the lyrics and based on that claims she co-wrote the song. Next thing we hear is people claiming the song was written by Wendy and Lisa.

The wooh is on the one!

Not sure how "telling" that is. I didn't claim the song was written by Wendy and Lisa because of that tweet (which I'd never read, of course) but rather from this line at Princevault:

"The song ['The Stick'] was written by Lisa Coleman, although the Library Of Congress lists the song as being written by Prince, so both are given credit here, although the album does not contain any writing credits."

Like I said, I stand corrected about the Wendy thing, which was just a slip.

Unless Lisa did more than she says in the tweet, though, it's an iffy claim. If someone provides inspiration (but none of the actual song), then I'd say it's up to the person who actually did the writing to decide if the "spark" deserves credit. I've had lots of "ideas" for songs that went this far, but if this is the sort of thing that the "Prince didn't write _____" contingent is talking about, well, it doesn't work. I know there are cases where people did more, but if that's all Lisa did on the Stick, well, then--that's a Prince-written track, as far as I'm concerned.

It's possible that Lisa did more, and that it's not made clear by the tweet. I know there are more substantial claims involving other songs, and I think people should get credit where credit's due. But I hope that she doesn't consider that line/idea by itself enough to deserve a co-write credit. If it were, then you'd have to add a whole mess of writers to a whole mess of songs.

WOW, LOVE THIS!. Assuming it gets air play [yeah right!] it would easily chart. Great job as it balances Purple with House with chart fodder i.e. a perfect mix for the masses.

Lisa's voice is on the background vocals of "The Stick". Like it was on a lot of Prince's 80's songs......rolleyes

It's a poorly thought-out Disco mess. Merely a recycled version of his unappreciated "Chelsea Rodgers" song. confused

"New Girl" should make this its new theme song! If it gets picked up for a third season and offer Prince a co executive producer spot, after he wins the Emmy next year for best guest starring role in a sitcom...
