Yes, a tactic to deal with bad publicity is to put the information out first before the media does.

The dozens of news items and the heartbeat of his own child was probaly due to Prince trying to open up a little bit more to the public and the media after he got married. After all he was married and planning a family so he did not have anything to hide from the media. You will note that they was really the only time he was so open about his personal life prior to that he never discussed his personal realationships with the media and did not do interviews for years. After the child passed away and his marriage ended he clamed up about his personal life. We get a tidbit about childhood
