Prince sacked bass player

http://www.list.co.uk/article/59066-prince-sacked-bass-player/

Prince sacked his old bass player because he didn't know enough songs and Ida Nielson was able to learn more than him.

Prince sacked his old bass player because he didn't know enough songs.

The 'Purple Rain' hitmaker, who continues to excite fans with a number of gigs in the UK, decided to get rid of the musician when he met Ida Nielson, who later joined his all-girl band 3RDEYEGIRL.

He said: "My old bass player, who shall remain nameless, didn't know as many songs as Ida.

"She had to learn 150 to get the gig and she did it. So I sacked my old bass player."

The 55-year-old singer also gushed the band's guitarist Donna Grantis - who has recorded the album 'PLECTRUM ELECTRUM' with Prince, Ida and drummer Hannah Ford - and said he was first drawn to her daring half-shaved hairstyle.

He told Mojo magazine: "When I first saw a clip of Donna, what struck me was her hair.

"I figured that anyone who ain't afraid to walk into the supermarket with that haircut ain't gonna be afraid of me."

The guitarist described Prince's Paisley Park Studios in Minnopelis as a "parallel universe" where "time stops existing" and touring with the singer can be demanding.

She said: "You know how doctors are always on call, because their pager buzzes and they have to head to the hospital and do surgery. That's what being in Prince's band is like. The phone can go at any minute. It can be hard if you let it get to you, but at this stage in our lives we couldn't ask for more."

Learning how to play 150 songs, especially if it's someone else's music, is a huge task. Yeah, it's only the bass parts, but I wonder how anyone can realistically pull off that what I suppose must have been a relatively short amount of time given by Prince. Or did he mean that Ida is able to play now 150 of his songs and that's why he's chosen to keep her more permanently in the band? I just find the idea of someone trying to figure out how to play the bass parts to 150 Prince songs, playing them over Prince's CDs at home or something like that, and then getting the gig when the "assignment" is completed sort of absurd.

I think Ida's very good, regardless.

Her last name is Nielsen, not Nielson. Journalists.......

The word "he" doesn't appear in the actual MOJO article upon which the List piece is based.

The gender of the "sacked" bass player could just as easily have been female.

i.e. Rhonda.

Ida would of learnt 150 for the gig. That's the way it is. At that standard it would take a month

They're playing the same dozen songs over and over again. This "150 songs" bullcrap is ridiculous.

.

Look at Bruce Springsteen: tours Australia and New Zealand, plays a NEW COVER on each date, oh and the covers are songs by local artists who made it big.

.

Prince? Still peddling the same tired crap year after year. And famz claim it is better than ever, because apparently Prince's legendary 1980s gigs and tours (i.e. the ones which were focused on NEW MUSIC) would obviously have been a lot more legendary if they'd featured a shouty woman and an endless cover of some disco tune.

Come on, where does it say he picked her because of her hair style? It doesn't. Her hairstyle attracted him. Hence the statement "what struck me was her hair". That's not why he "picked her" to be in his band. He clearly explains why he chose her - "She had to learn 150 (songs) to get the gig and she did it."

Bart you obviously haven't been to one of the recent shows. No disco tunes, no shouty woman.

Because I think some fans can always find issue with anything that Prince does. It gets a bit tedious.

Exactly - if that's why he would've picked her. But as you and I know, that's not the reason. We're on the same page though. lol I think Prince is a very visual person. It's always about the attraction or visual persona that piques his interest. But ultimately that's not what sustains it.

I live n Boston now and teh whole Prince thing reminds me off when Rick Pitino had enough of the fans and press bitching baout the good ole days..he called a press conference and stated that we need to get over it and Larry Bird is not walking back through the doors..Prince needs to hold that press conference as well

No. Read it again:

He clearly explains the bass player had to learn 150 songs, the guitar player... hairstyle.

Um yeah, I'm not missing anything. Her hairstyle didn't have to learn 150 songs; the talented human being wearing the hairstyle did.
