What's happening to my Prince? I will begin by saying that I have been a devoted Prince fan since 1981. I use to go to his shows at the small rock club venues, the leopard and leg warmer period...
I never missed a concert since... Then came Purple Rain and I had to share him with the masses...you guys in this forum know what I mean!
Then...FINALLY I had the pleasure and amazing fortune to meet and hang with Prince and the (real) Revolution, Sheila, Jerome, Wally, etc., each time they came to the Boston area. Backstage, the whole deal. We never had sex with them, we weren't groupies, therefore we were respected. This went on for years and eventually somebody became bigger than life- too big to join the biggest musicians in the world to record "We Are The World" for charity. That really upset me.
Things just got worse. I LOVE his music...it touches the core of my soul, but the man is selfish and a control freak. How could he sue his own fans for 2 million dollars? A lot of people record at concerts...I can completely understand that he doesn't want this happening and was really pissed, but to sue his fans for 2 million?
He could have gone about it in a different way and still made a statement.
I am so sad...he was my idol, my crush of all crushes (well, I still think he's sexy as hell).
His music and talent will always be at the top of my list because in my opinion there has never been a more talented musician than Prince, but Prince has lost my respect as a person.
Does anybody understand my point or am I about to get slammed?

Prince is a human being with flaws like we all have. We have all been guilty of putting him above other artist, but he is just a person nothing more nothing less. Mind you a fine talented person, but that's it.

You do know that he withdrew the lawsuit, with the comment that went something like, he was happy for fans to share his music, but not to profit from it. You know you are in love, when you cannot fall asleep because your reality is finally better than your dreams - Dr Seuss

Prince only upsets me when he acts human. How dare he spoil a perfectly good fantasy?! To be fair, the fantasy died about 25 yrs ago. "Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion" -- Martha Graham

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

All the historians on We Are The World say that Prince was right not to do the song. In fact most of the money raised by the album sales was stolen by criminals. The food they bought with album sales was stolen by various criminal groups in Africa then sold to the starving by these thugs. Then they started dropping the food to the people and the criminals would come and take the food by gun point. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

i know. people should try focusing on what really matters in life, like, saving innocent starfish. they can grow their limbs back and not even prince can do that.

The whole famine in Ethiopia was as much a political problem as anything else. Political factions stopping food from getting to their opponents. Still, naive or not, the intention was good. But then again, it's easy to say that more than 20 years later.

Anyway, the OP was right about one thing: (S)he will get slammed! Let me just remind you of a Terence Trent d'Arby quote who dedicated his Neither Fish Nor Fles LP to: "the Pisces everywhere who will always be misunderstood." I'm 1 of those 2. [Edited 3/4/14 14:09pm]

Have you looked at it from both sides? It is getting harder for an artist to make a living from music, touring aside, the money is being made by the distribution points like iTunes and Spotify etc. so when you have people selling bootlegs, the artist sees none of that. But on the other hand, fans want to hear/see the music and performances, and if the artist is not going to release them, the fans will use other means, right or wrong depending on which side of the fence you are on. Wow. The org has changed. I used to get slammed by folks here for calling people this out. It's like certain numbers of his fans (or sycophants, in this case) believe that by buying his music, they own stock in Prince or something. He is his own man and will do whatever he feels is right at the time.

Whats happening to your Prince? Its obvious, he is turning into a fridge.
Nothing wrong with that. A fridge is good for keeping food fresh. It does nothing for music though. I should know. I put NPS, Rave, Emmancipation, Musicology, MPLSound and Planet Earth into the fridge the other night. Nothing fresh came out however.
