Perhaps there's no "outrage" over this, because many people find it to be an inspired, mighty-fine reinterpretation of an underground Prince classic with his current band .
The crowd energy is fantastic too! Many people who were there seemed to think it was amazing.
When you say "modernizing" it for pop radio... I neither see nor hear anything resembling Maroon 5, Avril Lavigne, Miley Cyrus or other similar "chewing gum for the mind" music. Remember: Pop radio gave up on Prince around 1991 or so, and he in turn, told radio/Clear Channel/Warner Bros./etc. they can go bugger off themselves. He's been free, clear, contract-free and able to do his own thing, his own way ever since. He's not trying to make any in-roads in that world anymore.
That said, it's totally cool if you're not into this new version of the song or new band either (no need for everyone to get insult-oriented with one another). Personally, I wasn't a fan of Diamonds And Pearls era band, nor did I particularly think his shows were amazing circa 1998-2000 - but that's just my opinion and there are plenty of people who will disagree with me on this, which is fine.
I further maintain that even a "so-so" Prince show, is a thousand times better than most bands giving it their all.
For example: In 1999/2000 I took a friend to see Prince at a hit-and-run style show at the Academy Of Music in Philadelphia. It was an odd venue choice and the crowd was really bourgeois and stuffy. Having seen him numerous times before then and able to compare shows, band line-ups, set lists, etc. I did not dislike the show ... but I thought it was kinda "meh". My friend, however, who was used to seeing indie/alt synth pop bands like Depeche Mode, The Cure or many smaller then-up-and-coming bands indie bands (The Strokes before they blew up, etc.) as totally blown away by the same show.

It's not you, it's them.
You feel entitled to music from 3rd eye girl that you like.
You get angry because you don't like it. And they should make music that you like!

But what about When We're Dancing Close and Slow??? For me that was THE song of the night. In fact it was THE song of the five times I've ever seen him. Couldn't even remember having heard it before as it was so long ago I played his early stuff.
It's good that we all like different things. Even if some people don't have ears (not you Kudra).

The guy's hannahs husband, seems like a nice guy, Prince obviously likes him around otherwise I doubt he would be anywhere near the stage, just a young guy having a good time, What its all about

Agreed. And we were both actually THERE. Ooh me three, me three! something in the water was other worldly that night... I've listened to the Manchester second show and although it sort of reminds me of Shepherds Bush (and I know a recording is never the same as the buzz we obviously felt that night) there is something lacking (maybe Dreamer ) I need to re-listen to SBE! Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

....my only 'outrage' is that the first half of the performance hasn't been released as well! It was awesome on the night, and it's still awesome watching it back on You Tube.
Not quite sure how Prince can be bland and energised at the same time - but he's a talented guy, so if anybody can...!
As for whether the band could be technically better, I'll leave that for the musos to discuss...just remember sometimes the flaws create the magic.

Hi Josh | |

I never said that I don't like 3EG. I gave my honest opinion of their performance. I'm not really in a like or dislike stage with them. I assume they are building toward something and I support them in that. When they impress me, I'll post something saying they are impressive. However, some of the 3EG project is clearly not ready for primetime. The hodge-podge tweaking of the classics isn't working on a musical level. I'm talking pitch and harmony. Keyboard patches, guitar styles. Prince knows the audience will cheer of regardless of details. They are there for the experience of being there and will clap and cheer on cue regardless of what happens. He knows that. Manchester obliged. The Aresnio audience obliged. However... for those of us really listening... 3EG isn't really satisfying because they don't play Prince's material to it's full possibily. They do a lot of things that don't make musical sense like ignoring the key of a song when they solo. The tonal center of a piece matters. Watch Prince's guitar solo during SAIMH on Arsenio. 2-4 seconds of that was to die for, but the rest of it random posing and all about effects. I like it best when he completes his musical thoughts, so to speak. Something about the notes is their Mutiny/Ice Cream Castle mashup is clashing. Was it the onslaught of horns or the ICC sample or what? And guys... the costumes said it all. 3EG dressed like Leather Vikings, the horn section in Jazz Club suit and tie. Sigh.. The same clash happening with the period costuming was happening musically. Visually exciting? I guess, but musically satisfying? No. Musical Schizophrenia. I don't know what to do with what I hear. I don't hate this band yet. But to be honest, I haven't identified anything to love about them yet...

I don't hear any of them playing in the wrong key. But I agree Prince first solo was rather better than his second solo which to heavy on flashy runs and effects. The wooh is on the one!

Prince has always been a mashup of genres. Prince's problem is that most of his audience isn't as musically diverse as he is and will only ever appreciate portions of his aesthetics. I include myself in this as I dislike 80% of his "rap" endeavours (Face Down and Pussy Control excldued) and will probably never come to appreciate what he sees in most of it.
What you describe as musical schizophrenia with this viking/jazz club class I hear as an exciting harmonization of difference. And to me it worked almost perfectly. The main weak spot for me is that Donna's still learning from Prince how to do rhythm guitar for a lot of his songs and she's not quite good at it yet, but she's 100x better than when she started with him. Change it one more time..

Because live this version is STELLAR!! Everytime he played it in London, it blew my mind...love the song choice, love the version, love the delivery...so glad he revisited this classic

funksterr said: Believe me, Prince personaly was killing it, except the guitar solo, which was bland. But I thought he was excellent other than that. I'm excited to see what he does on Arsenio. But the bass player sounds like she don't know what to do next, and is playing in anticipation of Prince giving her a cue change. So she's on ice worried she may fukk up something. And Josh is... geez guys... how can I explain how bad this guy is? This guy is WORST than Kirky J, worst than Harmonica Dude, he is the most UNSKILLED person to EVER touch an instrument in a Prince band. And as I type that, I'm mindful of the Act I and Act II tour where Tony M actually PLAYED ACOUSTIC GUITAR.
Josh, the laptop DJ guy. OMG, how did Manchester applaud that? Shame on you Manchester. I know he was hard to see hiding in the shadows to the right of the stage, but where were your ears, gang? I'm afraid laptop JOSH, is, well for me anyway, he is beginining to symbolize the part of the 3rdeyegirl concept that's so perplexing. On it's surface, 3rdeyegirl should RAWK, but the new compositions are unsettling to say the least. Does anyone know what Josh's role is in shaping the new material? I'm starting to think a lot of this new stuff is Josh's handiwork and for Prince, he isn't vested too much in 3EG except as a way to maybe freshen up his sound and give the rock critics another nugget to chew on. I don't think he cares too much ow the new tracks are received.
Prince used to have Lisa Coleman. He used to have Dr. Fink and Jimmy Jam. Now he has Laptop Josh. Dont like his musical solo stuff....poppy, rnb, common,,,, neyo/usher/jason derulo /bieber sounding stuff..... But do you all really think this guy isnt a good session pianist.....and if he was shit.....and you know what prince is like,.....he dont do favours just coz its the drummers husband....if he cant play.....he wont be in the band.... One question for all the judgemental prince geeks on here..... Talent, or no talent..... http://youtu.be/s9AO0Ywezjg Watch with open mind, post thoughts.....

Im not even actually sure why this thread started actually.....just thought now..... Did joshua hit an incorrect key.....did he play a bum note.....did he lack in some way.....he played along with the band, in time, in key and sounded fine. Im rapidly going off this forum.....iv said before and il say again, im a massive prince fan but im noticing an unpleasant trait on here based on over zealous and slightly eccentric fans criticising anything that appears to be possibly a change in the perfect image some of you have of this "icon" that you remember from your glory years, and wish to continue remembering in this "perfect"form. Prince is a musician, a bloody good one, the rest of the band are a good session band, iv seen better but i wouldnt fault them, they play good, straight up classic rock and in all honesty are 200x better than half if the pre produced bubblegum pop mtv has to offer these days. The reason josha plays in the band is because in all honesty, he can play the piano, he can play reasonably well and he keeps up with the band, and plays as well as "your idol prince" wants him to play.....which in my eyes,.....is well. Your on a prince fan site, so stop picking apart your chosen musicians work, choices, statements, and decisions.....deal with it....if you love him that much....then accept it, move on, and stop complaining and go n listen to usher.

Dont get me wrong, watching the youtube vid i posted isnt the best video ever, hes not amazing, but in the same way.....he isnt shit either, he can play piano sufficiently for the band, he can hold a note when singing.....in english.... PRINCE.ORG SUPER-FANS/SUPER OBSERVATIONALLY CYNICAL CRITICISERS..... Please....take a deep breath....*passes brown paper bag to prince geeks* and relax.... Are you a fan or a critic....ask yourself that question, and answer it honestly.... And if you answered "fan"....be it "past" or "present".....then shut the fuck up, stop having a panic attack based on a 30+ yr professional musicians (whos fan forum ur on btw) preferences in session musicians.....leave him to make the BIG decisions.....and you go and make the smaller ones like "which greatest hits cd to play before you go to bed" :-) For anyone who has just seen my posts,.... Feel free to check my profile and/or previous posts on the forum and tell me if you agree with my stances or not.... If i need reporting, report me, but in all honesty, i only speak truthfully and honestly....and what iv said today and in past posts.....needs saying Imo!! Recently spoken to a well known p fan who i wont mention and they actually deleted their account on this forum based in the sh*t (sorry for language) that some people on here come out with. If the super fans on here in question don't already know.....you are getting a bad name for yourselves and giving the site a bad name within the prince fan-groups....to the point people avoid the site from what i have heard since signing up. Again i don't refer to everyone on here, I'm sure alot of people like me have similar feelings.....the difference is....i don't mind making mine known. Much love "Only wanna see you laughing in the purple rain" X
