I am so SICK of this "real musician" crap!!!! What is a "real musician"? Just because someone can play chords on a guitar doesn't mean their music is anymore real than someone that uses synths or sequencers. You wanna know why Vintage Trouble doesn't have any hits? Because no one is buying their music, plain and simple! It has nothing to do with if they're "real" or not. (And I personally think its because their music is bland, unoriginal and just mediocre at best.) And Jack White doesn't have any hits!!?? Blunderbuss debuted at #1! SMDH

This conservative POV annoys me to hell too.

For conservative classical musicians jazz was junk. For many conservative jazz musicians rock, funk and all was crap. And now guess who's been the rockers' and funkateers' black lambs for 20 years: electronic music and hip-hop (which is, by essence, electronic music).

This is ridiculous. Plenty of well trained jazz musicians play crappy, uninspired elevator jazz while some electronic musicians who hardly ever touched an intrument other than computers, sequencers and samplers have composed extremely creative and complex music. + in terms of skills it's easier to be a bad rock band than to be an extremely good electronic music composer.

Art is not about "how" you do it but about "how good you are at what you do", no matter what is the "what" you do. Music and art are all about being creative, innovative and skilled in one particular domain. Prince of all people should know that. I think conservative Wynton Marsalis wouldn't think much of 1999: my dad who's a jazz and classical afficionado certainly couldn't make the diference between Sign O The Times and the last Ke$ha album! Still it's no secret that 1999 and SOTT were 2 of the most innovative and strongest albums and artistic statements of their time rolleyes

But maybe the problem, and I've said it numerous times, is Prince's lack of musical culture: it seems he hasn't heard a single record outside of mainstream music played on mainstream radios since the late 80's. And of course by comparison to Prince's days, what you hear on mainstream radios and MTV nowadays is the worst junk the music industry has to feed uneducated consumers with! He that's what he bases his opinion of electronic music on, then sure I can understand all the dis! But that's like 2% of what's really happening in the world of electronic music, the worst 2%! Except for Björk, Prince probably hasn't got a clue of who the great electronic composers of the 90's and 2000's are and of what they did (hell! he hadn't even heard of Tricky in 1997, back when Tricky was the hottest artist in the alternative music world!). Prince is too focused on american mainstream pop, rock and R&B. There's a whole world of musical experimentations and alternative music out there. I wish these gals from 3rdEyeGirl would expose him to some of it. They're young, they should know.

Prince explained in Musician magazine in 1997, "Man, learn your instrument! Be a musician! You can't call yourself a musician if you just take a sample and loop it. You can call yourself a thief, because all you're doing is stealing somebody else's groove."

Prince sees a real musician as someone who has learned to creatively play musicial instruments with talent and skill, has talent in creating music. Prince himself has used synthesizers and drum machines, etc. for decades, so Prince obviously doesn't object to the use of synths and drum machines. As Prince said in Guitar Player magazine, "I appreate an instrument. It doesn't matter if it's a guitar or a synthesizer. I always know what the whole song is going to sound like. It's all in here [taps his head]." As Prince said in Musician magazine, "1999 is me running all the computers myself. I think I had the first Linn drum machine. I did Private Joy with a prototype of that Linn. Technology played a big part in my music." In Keyboard magazine Prince said, "I see everything in my mind first. I just start pushing buttons, and I discover the sounds I can make with it. I listen to what tone goes with that color. Sometimes a particular sound will give me a whole song, like the harpsichord sound on Manic Monday. That sound just dictated that part. I've had every drum machine ever made. I put my own internal rhythm on top of the Linn LM-1. Nothing has the timing of that thing. It locks differently than any other drum machine."

He didn't say Jack White hasn't ever had a hit. Prince said, "Jack White is great, he’s the real thing, but he isn’t having hits. Why aren’t Vintage Trouble or Lianne La Havas having hits?"

I see Prince's point. The really popular top selling music today to mainstream trendy audiences is the "soul/R&B" pop that's devoid of funk (Rihanna, Robin Thicke, etc.), and cheesy kiddie bubblegum pop (Justin Bieber, etc.), and teen angst rap (Eminem, etc.).

The Cocteau Twins are not American mainstream pop, rock and R&B.

Nice pic. Looks like he's going to a Hendrix impersonator gig though lol

Little Richard rocked the headband with big hair, thin mustashe, colorful flamboyant androgynous/pimp look before Jimi Hendrix. Prince rocked the headbands, etc. in the past, too.

right, I am sick of this, too.

The main problem with Prince, is that you can't hear just how skilled he is as a studio-musician, - where is the "real musician" in his studio music now... his new music sucks: 2013-14 (so far)...

the problem is that the new music sounds uninspired, like written on a formula, he is no better or worse than the "modern" programmers.

His studio music sucks, pretzelbodylogic yuck my arse... cry

AMen. I used to subscribe to that bullshit until I heard Dangermouse's "grey" album. That album is a masterpiece and he did it all in his bedroom on a computer.

So Seductive by G-Unit doesn't have a traditional instrument in it but is still a song that could take on any of the so called 'real music' bands

Took damn near a month for this Prince issue of MOJO Magazine to be mailed to me and aside from $23 for a ripped 20 pages because of bad handling by U.S. post office, the magazine spread is very well done.
