When Doves Cry.

It was so freakin different. They'd been playing "17 days" on the radio and I realized that he was talented. Then they played WDC and I lost my damn mind. eyepop

I am totally with you on Controversy, it was the extended version I first heard.
Three songs really turned me on to Prince at first: When Doves Cry (the first song I got), Cross The Line (the second) and Controversy (the third)...
Personally . I think we are all Boring with No Lives cause all we do is talk about Prince,Criticize and Gossip. I need a Horny Man is what I Need and probably so do most of yas. We are Sexually Frustrated what we R... Amen..!!! - zelaire

I wanna be your lover...
I heard that on the radio and loved it, went to the music store and bought the 8 track...
THEN I heard soft N wet...
and I put 1 and 1 together and figured out that they were by the same person...some guy named "Prince"
so I went and bought that 8 track.
Fell in love with both albums in their entirety and ever since then every time a Prince album came out I bought it...
I always bought the 8 track or cassette (before the CD
era)...never got into albums or records.
Same thing happened with Teena Marie.
I heard "out on a limb" then "Portegese (sp) Love" and was hooked forever.
peace heart

For me it was "When doves cry". Music videos were in its early years. And my sister would turn on the videos waiting for Modonna's Borderline video to show. They played this video from a little man in high heels and I was hooked.

I had a friend who tried for years to get me into Teena Marie. I liked Portuguese Love, Square Biz, the popular stuff but still resisted... until I heard "I'll Have My Cake and Eat It Too" :O and "You Make Love Like Springtime" omg and "Tune in Tomorrow" omfg I hopped onboard QUICK! biggrin

In 1990, as an innocent 16 year old, I bought a crappy compilation album (don't remember the title). 90% of the songs I'd be ashamed to admit owning, now, but ONE track stood out a mile - 'Thieves In The Temple'. I just could NOT stop listening to it; that sitar-type guitar going round & round in my brain. STILL love it!

It wasn't until I went to Uni 3 years later, though, that my room-mate kept pinching my Blur album (which he kept listening to) and eventually asked me to swap it for one of his. Fed up with his antics, I selected the prince album (even though I hadn't listened to it) and... well, the rest is history. I was, like, 'OMG!!!'.

It was the movie "Purple Rain"... I watched it and I knew my life had changed forever...

also, around that time I saw "Thieves in the Temple" video and it only broadened the excitement.
