What about the meaning that conflicts with his religious views?

This song is a deeper level of Something In the Water Does Not Compute

He performed Darling Nikki as late as the year 1999

I saw him in perform Darling Nikki in 2001, which absolutely floored me!

me too, and it was with a full band arrangement! Of course, he had the audience sing the most famous line

This is one of those songs that should not be performed again, by anyone, including the current incarnation of Prince, because unlike other Prince songs this one would not benefit from a remake. The Revolution versions of this song are perfect as they are. No need to ruin it with a watered down version.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Exactly, as if everyone would care about him mixing his personal life into his art. Shit, that is what makes it great!

lol but the drama around it it was supposed to be an 'attack' on the beautiful one Apollonia

if she didn't run out, how does "Come Back Nikki Come Back work" and the faces Jerome made at her were priceless

(87) INT. HALLWAY -- NIGHT

as Prince twists aggressively past a
handful of FANS, rudely disregarding
their attention. He Cuts into the
dressing room.

(88) INT. DRESSING ROON -- NIGHT

He's agitated, paces back and forth in a
frenzy. Suddenly the DOOR flies open.
Billy Sparks enters angrily--

BILLY
What the fuck's wrong with
you, Prince?!

PRINCE
I don't have time for your
bullshit, Billy. What do you
want?

BILLY
My stage is no place for your
personal shit!

PRINCE
That's life, man.

BILLY
Life my ass, motherfucker!
This is a business, and you're
not too far gone to see that.
(a beat)
I've told you this before.
You're not pulling them in
like you used to. The only
person who gives a fuck about
your music is yourself.

PRINCE
Fuck off!

But Billy can't help laughing--

BILLY
Just like your old man...

Prince shoots him a threatening look--

BILLY
Yeah -- you got it. Tell me
I'm wrong.
(a beat)
You're not blind. Look around
you. No one's digging you.

Prince turns away--

BILLY
Look at your band. Are they
in here right now? They're
out there 'cause they can't
stand being in the same room
with you.
(a beat)
What a fucking waste...like
father, like son--

PRINCE
Lay off that!

Billy turns to go--

BILLY
Take your head out of your
ass, Prince, check it out --
unless you like the view up
there. Your music doesn't
make sense to anyone but
yourself.

I so love that movie!!

Anyways, Billy says the kid is in rare form that night, right. He loves the show, but then he flips on Prince to play Captain-save-a-hoe. Billy says nobody digs or understands his music, but Billy is lying, he was just loving it one song ago. And the people who should understand it understand it perfectly; Billy, Morris, Jerome, (not Brenda or Susan, they're just staring at the show, lol) and for damn sure Apollonia who got called out then ran out.

I would have LOVED to have been there! lol
What?

Prince did sing the word mastrubate during 2000 2001 Hit And Run tour, but he changed his mind in 2001 and Darling Nikki was morphing into Joy And Repetition.Prince played a eushed version of Computer Blue in the 1998.it would be a perfect choice with his rock band but i bet the reason is because Prince finds some od lyrics against his religious belifs.

YAHOO INTERNET LIFE * October 1997

Sites O' the Times

Artists have always been interested in
new technologies. DaVinci was.
Duchamp was. And the Artist is, too.

By Ben Greenman

YIL: On Emancipation, you wrote two songs about the Internet -- "Emale" and "My Computer." What was the inspiration for those songs?

TA: A man who unsuccessfully tried 2 "play me" was the catalyst 4 "Emale." I imagined his woman looking at her computer and being seduced by her "emale." "My Computer" was inspired by some of the insightful talks I have had with many positive people on the Net.

YIL: "Emale" is about cybersex. What do you think about cybersex? Have you ever done it?

TA: Ain't nothin' like the real thang.

YIL: In Graffiti Bridge, you use a Macintosh. Do you still use a Mac?

TA: My art department does. My wife owns an IBM. That's what I use.

YIL: Does "Computer Blue" have anything at all to do with computers?

TA: It may. That hasn't revealed itself yet.

no.. impotence

incorrect, "until I find the righteous one, computer blue"

This line says it all, until he finds the woman for him, he is abstaining from sex, which leads to blue balls, which is the build up of semen to the point that it hurts.

Computer Blue = blue balls

So to say he is impotent leads one to believe he is not capable of delivering the sexual goods, nothing could be further from the truth, he is making a conscoious choice to abstain, or, to not have sex with anyone until the right one comes along.

There must be something wrong with the machinery is simply an afterthought and not to be confused with impotence. It is only him making fun of himself and not the bringing of attention to an actual medical issue.

I do however see your argument for impotence and how it could be interpreted that way.

Yeah...no.

The "computer" is the id - the part of the psyche that rules instinctual drives (like sex). In the "poor lonely computer" part of the song, the point is made that there is a difference between lust (the id, ruled by the emotionless, sex-driven computer) and love. This distinction escapes the computer.

The "blue" simply refers to the fact that he's male. It's a throwback to the "boys in blue, girls in pink" tradition. In fact, there is a reference made to "girl computers" in the full version of the song. ("It's time you learned women are not butterflies. They're computers, too - just like you, Computer Blue.")

I really think it's just his way of saying that "he's got the blues" on the album. The user interfaces of the computers at the time were often dominated by blue or bluish shades (including the UIs of digital samplers etc.). So that's what I've thought might have provided the association between those two words in the title in a more concrete sense. However, I've considered the "computer" to be just "what's happening inside him" in general.

The sexual references are obvious, but more in the sense of Prince thinking that he can use his "sexual prowess" to attract and win over the woman that's "the right one". The latter half of the song "reprimands" him for being so sexually oriented as that's what has resulted in him ending up being "lonely". I don't think the concept of the "id" is really comparable to a computer, but of course, who knows what Prince has really had in his mind when writing the song.

I don't think it's directly comparable, either - except in the sense that both the id and computers are devoid of reasoning and emotions.

I don't think it's directly comparable, either - except in the sense that both the id and computers are devoid of reasoning and emotions.

I suppose that, in the second Freudian topography, you could say that the id is devoid of "mature emotions". A person that is dominated by his id is someone with an underdeveloped ego, experiences social problems, acts by his uncontrolled urges, fails to form long-lasting relationships and so on. So in that sense until he "finds the righteous one" Prince could be said to be dominated by the "id" part of his psyche.

However, computers are one sort of "reasoning machines" on their own right and I wouldn't attribute any sort of "wild sexuality" to them. Not that I can claim to be able to really tell why Prince used the word "computer" for the title. For example, we know that the "elevator" in "Let's Go Crazy" was another name for the devil ("are we gonna let the devil bring us down, oh no, let's go"). Apparently he was simply instructed to switch the word for another by WB, so that's all the "depth" there was to that metaphor in that instance.
