I'm sure this may have been discussed in the past, but I was thinking about the album cuts and b-sides that got radio play back in the day. Even songs that were released as singles and didn't chart, but still initially got airplay.

I guess I'm interested in which markets were playing what songs.

Growing up in the greater Detroit area, I was somewhat spoiled by how much attention and radio play new Prince music would get.

Here are some of my memories.

• Erotic City getting play on all of the top 40 stations in the area as if it was a "real" single release. I never did hear "17 Days" on regular radio, with the exception of play during "The Electrifying Mojo" - but he is another story.

• "She's Always in My Hair" was a battle of a new song on Z95.5 (now Channel 95-5). It won.

• "Hello" was played regularly on FM 98 WJLB.

• 96.3 WHYT's debut of "Love or $". Hyped extensively for an entire day (lol!). Kiss was huge and apparently someone thought "Love or $" would be the next "Erotic city".

• "Play In the Sunshine" played on Z95.5 during the release of the Sign O' The times LP.

• "Adore" played regularly on FM 98 WJLB

• "Good Love" (from the Bright Lights, Big City Soundtrack) played on Z95.5 in April of 1988. They used to have an all request hour from 8-9 PM, and this one would get requested and played. Soon after, Alphabet Street was released.

• "Lovesexy" played on FM 98 WJLB during the release of the Lovesexy LP.

I don't remember ever hearing the following songs/releases getting any play in the Detroit Area:

The only B side i ever heard played regularly was Erotic City
Good Love made the air waves, but soon was forgot about

Another Lonely Christmas was played every year in December. Still does I believe.

Housequake and Hot Thing were played a lot when their A-side singles were released. Though, if remember correct, Hot Thing was technically part of a double A-side released to RnB stations.

92.3 in Cleveland used to play "Hot Thing" pretty regularly... this would've been late 90s. Always a treat!

93.1, the r&B channel, plays "Housequake" a lot.

Erotic City was basically a giant hit.. it was played ALL THE TIME in NYC.

Hot Thing was also REALLY REALLY big on z100 in NYC .. it was often in the top 5 requested songs of the night.. it was REALLY BIG... dont get me started on how SOTT was completely bumbled and could have had 5 or 6 top 10 hits...

anyway!

at the time of Parade's release... Z100 played New Position and Girls and Boys a lot.. i think they were trying to feel out what would be the next single... of course they never tested Mountains...

Adore was ALL OVER the RnB station in NYC and was always in the top 8 at 8 .. most requested songs... So was Housequake.. In fact, most nights P had 2 songs in the top 8 with HQ and Adore.. funny they never played IIWYGF

YES! The Electrifying Mojo and the interview he did right after the 1986 Birthday Concert in Detroit was a HUGE deal back in the day. I remember the station hyping the interview non-stop, as it was recorded after one of the two concerts played here that week (there was a lesser know concert on June 5th or 6th, then the actual Birthday show on 6-7-86).

I believe they played the entire interview a few days after it was initially recorded.

It was during that very interview that Prince stated that Detroit was like his second home.

The sad state of broadcast radio these days . . . there are only a handful of Prince songs that get played (1999, LRC, LGC, WDC, PR, RB, Kiss and 7). The true DJ is gone.

My local station played Paisley Park when ATWIAD was released. Wasn't there a delay between the album and Raspberry Beret as the first single? I think the station chose what they thought the first single would be. It was the first thing I heard from ATWIAD on the radio. I remember being surprised when I found out Raspbery Beret was the single.

OH - I completely forgot about "Paisley Park" being played before 'Raspberry Beret" was released.

My local station (Z 95.5 in Detroit) picked "Paisley Park" up as the "lead single", as well.

Kinda' weird that the programmers picked it over more commercial tracks like "Raspberry Beret", "Pop Life" or even "America".

Yeah, I seem to remember a delay between the album and "Raspberry Beret" being released as a single.

I think "Pop Life" could/would have been video had he done a video. I was always surprised "America" wasn't a bigger hit.

When 2 R in Love

There were a few radio stations that when a new Prince album came out you heard the whole things in that period of time

I grew up in San Diego. We had one "black" radio staion, 92.5. They regularly played "How Come U Dont Call Me Anymore", "Erotic City", "She's Always in my Hair", "Love or Money" and "La La La He He Hee". Of course "Adore" was on their "Quiet Storm" slow jam show pretty much every night...everything else they played was released as a single.

I remember being on vacation near Cleveland and hearing the long version of "Girl" on Power 108

Here in London more than 20 years ago I would think, before Kiss FM went all stupid, Chris Phillips used to play B-sides and rarities every weekend, songs like Horny Toad and Prince's version of If I Love U 2nite. Ahh, those were the days....

i grew up in king george va and listened to dc stations.what i heard ALOT of was sexy dancer,"how come you dont call me anymore(this never has stopped playing it seems),dmsr,17 days(i swear they played an extended version),erotic city(still getting played),hot thing(not an official single remember),and of course adore(probably his most played radio hit ever)shhhhh

KROQ in Los Angeles used to play tons of Prince album cuts...Controversy, Starfish & Coffee, Anna Stesia...they played Lovesexy (the title track) out the wazoo when that album first came out, I remember hearing it for the first time while driving home from work, thought it kicked major ass lol..

Another station played Play In The Sunshine and U Got The Look (before it was officially released as a single)...yet another station played Gett Off (again, before it was officially released, and played the original version, not the D&P version), and also played Sexy MF uncensored lol ...

You reminded me that WHYT here in Detroit played the Promo version of Gett Off long before the D&P version was released. I remember desperately trying to figure out what the song was. That was probably the last time I remember truly being excited about a new Prince song on the radio and wondering what the album would be like.

We really were spoiled with Prince because what other artist warranted and was allowed so much airplay for B-sides and album cuts. Truly amazing when you think about it....

Yes - definitely "Another Lonely Christmas".

You are right about "Housequake", as well. I recall the R&B station in Detroit playing it as if it was a real single. They also played "If I was your Girlfriend"regularly, although the Top 40 stations in town did not.

"Hot thing" was indeed released as a promo - I used to have a copy of it. It had the Edit on the "A" side and the Extended remix as the B-side.

So cool to hear "17 Days" getting airplay. Very, very rarely have I heard it played on Detroit radio, and never back in the day. Strange to me that "Erotic City" took off on radio, but "17 days" didn't...

It's funny you say that because I don't remember hearing glam slam on the radio in cleveland
