Plectrum Electrum - the most overhyped album (by Prince, for his fans) in history

Dude's been hawking this album for over a year and still no show. I miss the good old days when he'd like, yunno, release albums.

yeahthat

That was the biggest hype ever - including floating that bloating messianic statue down the Thames!

'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

This was a trending tactic last year. Having trouble googling it, but I read a 2013 industry roundup that said 2013 was the year of seemingly endless album promotion. The article also predicted 2014 would be the year of surprise releases (e.g. Beyoncé).

Somebody is forgetting about Guns N' Roses, "Chinese Democracy" & Dr.Dre's, "Detox" but Prince fanatics are often slaves to hyperbole.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

the most overhyped album in history only here on the org and among Prince fans

The rest of the world has no idea about this stinker and could quite frankly care less!

The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Somebody couldn't give a toss about putting Guns N'Roses in his headline. He doesn't need to be an honest man.

You know the albums coming out within the next two months. You know he doesn't have a major label to push his music like in times past, so let the man do what he needs to do and chill the fuck out. This place is full of whiners and complainers.

Change it one more time..

The whole purpose of hyping music is to get people interested in it so it is not a bomb.

P has a history of not doing too much of anything to promote his work. I mean he did not do one interview to promote Purple Rain something that would not work today. The masses have the attention spans of nats. He is uping his marketing skills. I wish someone would notice how great Maddona is at marketing herself despite the music being shitty. I will take any of P's unmarketed half ass projects over any of Maddona's well marketed crap since the early 90's.

While I agree with a lot of what you say, comparisons are pointless here.

Put simply, why has he been banging on about the same forthcoming album for over a year? What would be the point? The answer..there is no point. He doesn't even know.

Still, if I were Hannah Ford, a small part of me might be going: "C'mon, dude. Let's do this."

lol You sure you're not the one taking things too seriously? I mean you created a whole thread about it. Why not just wait for the album to come out, seeing that's pretty much all anyone can do at this point.

not overhyped at all unless you are here on this website talking about it

let's face it, it's gonna suck hard like 2010 or Planet Earth - we just have to think about it more before it comes out

What Hype? That's the problem. There is no hype. He's not even lised on the kobalt roster of artist.

He has only started to hit the mainstream media this year and realize P putting out a full on rock record is going to piss off some of his RnB bands and be met with

skepticism by the rock crowd. He is doing the right thing to hype it up and I like the idea of him taking his time with this project. Something he has not done since 2004.

Not sure if a full rock album from Prince will piss off the R&B crowd much, since he hass always been known to mix up his albums with various genres of music with rock, pop, funk, r&b, jazz, etc., With this added trio, it just pretty much seems he's into the rock thingf or now, and who knows how long that will last, until he decides to go in another direction musically. For example, between 2004 and 2011, it seemed he was more into funk, r&b, jazz, blues, slow jams, soul ballads, pop, rockabilly, and a little bit of rock here and there.

**Oh, and just to add a lot of latin-flavored/salsa music and gospel. He covered a lot during that time period.

This is what Prince has needed to do for years.

Fans know his more rock tracks. The general public do not. So many people (especially in the UK) do not know Prince as a guitarist. 'Betcha by golly wow" and TMBGITW were two of his last real hits here. Even the last couple of albums people might have listened to - Planet earth and 20ten were not guitar centric albums.

His new (slightly more masculine) image and the new (all girl) band - the small gigs, the cheap tickets. This is Prince at his best. Proving a point with a guitar. They're not likely to win over many metal heads, but they have a fair chance at the pop charts, especially since the girls actually have personalities.

It may well be overhyped but it needs to be. To be fair songs like 'fix' 'pretzel' and the instrumental title track are all pretty sweet. The only downside could be the possibility that 'LOL' and 'let'sGC' could also be on the album meaning we've heard quite a lot already.

With a couple of TV spots, or a live concert broadcast PlectrumElectrum could do really well in the UK at least. Unless he starts dropkicking live kittens from his hotel room window it's almost an automatic UK top 10 album now. Which seems to be the aim along with launching the careers of 3rdeyegirl.

(weird they've never played the song 3rdeye IMO)

Exactly, he needs to win over a whole new audience with this project.

No way this is the most overhyped album in history...

But it begs the question - What was Prince's most overhyped album? I'm thinking Rave. He did a lot of promo for that album - TV spots and interviews all through the US and Europe. Signed by Arista, with Clive Davis kissing his ass, the 'Produced by Prince' thing, even though he was still prince at the time etc. Rave was supposed to be for Prince what Supernatural was for Santana. Surely that was his most overhyped album.

The only thing that is hyping Plectrum Electrum is the fact that it will be his first album in four years - which is astounding given that prior to 2010, he more or less released an album a year. But realistically, it's only us Prince fans who know or care.

... I also still have my doubts that it will see the light of day.
