What was with Prince's lip-synching in the mid-90s?

For someone who preaches such an anti-lip-synching stance, he seems to have forgotten all about the mid-90s where he lip-synched almost every television performance he did.... The Chris Rock show doing Face Down, Emancipation on The Brits, TMBGITW at The World Music Awards.... and there are more that I can't recall off the top of my head....

Seems ol' Princey boy has a short memory!

He was having problem with the people who were mixing his music on the live shows-so he decided to prerecord some live music and sometimes only parts of the music where prerecorded. All though some shows required lip synching. That didn't last too long though.

My brother's band has the same problem with there live shows-the person assigned at a particular venue just doesn't know how to mix the music properly.

I think he did perform the Mustang Mix of tmbgitw on Soul Train as well as the hits medley on the American Music Awards where he gave his famous "Prince is dead and don't worry about my money" speech. I thought he sang Face Down live on the Chris Rock show? It WAS most peculiar seeing him lipsync everywhere for a minute. Glad that stopped. We didn't need another SNL hoe down ala Ashley Simpson.

From my understanding, it was more of a "fuck you" statement to the industry. We all know how Prince likes that green, and I think he saw performing at these shows as a necessary evil at that time, so simply coasted.

I thought his worst lip synch "performance" was the Soul Train appearance (at least, I think it was Soul Train? 1995?) He performed "Now", and something else.

Talk about phoning it in, he wasn't even trying.

BINGO!
Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

I dunno, aside from the lip syncing, I thought that performance of Now was pretty amazing. Love how he dropped the mic after the scream..or was it the water bottle that he dropped? Now I forget...but it was good shit.

Regardless of his reasons, it still makes him a hypocrite when you consider his very public disdain for it only five years later.

As always, one rule for Prince, one rule for everyone else.

This was his most plastic period in his career.

Even when playing live, half the music was pre-recorded. mad

Some great songs though. cool

He didn't even try to hide it. The VH1 performance of "Pussy Control" seemed ridiculous by intention - all that silly dance stuff that he did at the time in those TV shows. A few other more "respectable" acts were doing it at the time too when they were requested to do it, they didn't even hide it.

Weren't there even some performances when he wasn't using a mic? The TMBGITW performance?

Doesn't everyone lipsync on a show like Soultrain anyway?

He did apparently lipsync a few times after his son died, but that's another story.

Soul Train: Nobody sings live on Soul Train.99% of the time it's straight from the CD. LOL!!!

World Music Awards: I read in interview right before the show and he was upset that he had to lip-synch and they had that big symbol in front of the stage. In the same interview he complained about Kenny G. playing "that damn horn in the hallway." LOL!!!!!

AMA's: I think that might have been a "F-U" because he was chewing gum the whole time. LOL!!!

With all of the stuff coming about the Superbowl I wonder if his instruments were plugged in...Hmmmmm?

The superbowl was live-that is why the purple rain guitar solo is off key-it was not set up right by his guitar handler.
