So since Prince says that it's ok to share bootlegs... ... as long as they aren't sold, can we count that as him officially giving permission to the "elite" trading circles to share uncirculating outtakes like Cosmic Day, Stimulation, Everybody Want What They Don't Got,etc, etc, etc??? I know I know, wishful thinking...but a man can dream, right?

Thats what he said in his press conference. Sharing is "cool" but selling is the problem. We heard it from the horses mouth. Great news indeed!!

None of the sites named (and not named) in the suit that I frequented offered ANYTHING for sale. It was all free sharing. In fact, the only place I see any Prince bootlegs for sale is in my email inbox. Some guy has been sending an e-catalog to me semi-regularly for at least a decade.

I call bullshit. Prince is from the old school. This coming from a guy that once said "The Internet Is Over", Prince saying sharing is cool, can't mean filesharing, because why else would he have sued 22 people who hosted links to his live bootlegs? For all we know, Prince considers "sharing" trading CDs of his music with other people offline. Prince was trolling. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

Prince - Prince: Fans sharing music is coolby Bang Showbiz | 05 February 2014
Prince admits he owns ''bootleg'' music, and while he agrees leaked music comprises on quality he doesn't mind having music uploaded onto the internet by fans if the intention is for sharing purposes.
Prince says it's ''cool'' when fans share music. The 'Purple Rain' hitmaker has scoffed at reports he filed a $22 million lawsuit against 22 internet users who allegedly posted recordings of his live performances online. The 55-year-old musician insists he would never sue his own fans and is happy for them to share his songs as long as they are not doing so to make money. Owners of the songs in the thread in the above link, Prince gives you his blessing to share them, just don't sell them! [Edited 2/5/14 14:58pm]

it's his way of telling us he's sorry
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
If this is true, it's a great disappointment for me. I think Prince has changed his position in view of the bad publicity his actions gave him in some circles, including some fans. I think it's a shame. --- On the other hand, I wish some orgers stopped pretending to represent all fans. Fans have different opinions , they are not a mass of gregarious people with a uniformized mind. So, for example, not really, this is not the way of telling "us" he is sorry. Who are "us"? I'm not included in any "us", least of all in the "us" of fans who approve distributing music ilegally. Please be strong enough to have an independent mind and don't project your opinions into all fans. [Edited 2/6/14 1:22am]

I believe that was mainly a move on Prince's behalf to get some free publicity in relation to his new 3rd Eye Girl project! As well as some kind of 'warning' to bootleg sharers that possibly Prince will sue you for a million US dollars. He killed two birds in one stone there IMO. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

This. Believe it when he opens the vault as website for free/sharing. He needs to distance himself, and play good cop, too. P is good with sharing but his attorneys are "just doing their job!".

they weren't sued, he withdrew the lawsuite

If he doesn't technically 'own' them how can he sue?
And he withdrew the lawsuite

If I remember right from one of my classes in the Audio Recording program, the sharing part is "while in the comfort of your home". You can play the music at home while friends or family are there. You just really shouldn't/can't record that en masse and distribute it whether free or sold. It's been a few years since I've had that class so it's a bit fuzzy around the edges for me.
No matter your age, pursue your dreams so that you will LIVE.

you know as well as I that Prince's statement has no bearing on whether or not tracks such as these get shared. If they do start circulating, then the original owners can't be superior any more, so it seems unlikely. RIP
