When did PRINCE become the THIRD best musician in minneapolis behind JAM AND LEWIS? WE all know JAM AND lewis passed prince a long...time ago as far as creativity and musicianship...,
I THINK THAT IS REALLY WHY HE FIRED THEM... HE KNEW DEEP DOWN THEY WERE MUCH BETTER PRODUCERS AND SONGWRITERS THAN HE... SO HE GOT RID OF them and they waxed his ass even more... i read in BLACK ENTERPRISE MAGAZINE THAT JAM IN LEWIS IS WORTH OVER 200 MILLION! WHAT IS PRINCE WORTH?...MAYBE 10 TO 15 MILLION AT BEST... I THINK THEY SURPASSED HIM IN 86...WHAT DO YOU THINK? " could I be... the most beautiful man in the world! plain to see, i"m the reason that God made a man!"UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN GRADUATE! Just my opinion, but their musical visions are different in the overall scheme of things.

Jam & Lewis are like the Stock, Aitken & Waterman of Black pop music.
Of course SAW are the Hi-NRG Motown! --------------------
I am internet forum artiste, do not be alarmed. --------------------

This is but one example. Jam and Lewis seem to have a larger repetoire of other artists and groups they've produced FOR. Seeking to write FOR or WITH those artists and produce the songs in collaboration with that artists' musical visions.
I don't know any of them personally or first-hand but it seems that Jam and Lewis would produce in such a way as to get across what the artist(s) is trying to say at that point in their life. They would be more transparent and let the artist project. Prince is such a big star he overshadows those he's produced. His presence is overwhelming. He doesn't know how to get out of the way. Please, let's not turn this into a flame war and attack on me. I'm open to change my mind. I only wish to discuss it.

Jam & Lewis are good but overall they have never taken the risks with their careers that Prince has.
They record safe R&B songs which are generally quite good. But I never expect anything challenging from them. I may not dig Prince's directions, but I give him props for being a kook sometimes.

It may be because they as individual artists were never an act with an image like Prince. They were part of an ensemble/group-The Time. Then they concentrated on producing others. To me the Prince vision and style and the Jam & Lewis vision and style are complimentary for the "Minneapolis Sound". Prince's "kookiness" is perhaps a catalyst but Jam & Lewis are the grounding from which it all springs.

I also realize Prince's signature is all over The Time(the ensemble or group of which Jam & Lewis were a part), and that sort of helps to emphasize my first point.

CHRONIC,as always your comments stimulate thangs!!!
Yes JAM and LEWIS are BAD. and richer than PRINCE. but so what? micheal has made more money than prince but MONEY and success shouldn't mean a DAMN thing. true artists (beatles,miles,dizzy,marvin.stevie,curtis...) don't let commercial success get in the way get in the way of ART and committment. i love terry & jimmy jam's work. heck they helped janet find herself...but why diss prince or them? prince is GREAT because he always took chances. to wit bro...any guy who follows a successful second album with a NON-radio friendly DIRTY MIND and goes from P-RAIN to around the world gets my respect. but again CHRONIC i digs yo style...preach on bro!!!

I happen to enjoy Prince's music, is that a problem? I think he is a better song writer and has taken more twists and turns and chances then Jam & Lewis, now you don't agree with that that's fine with me. I resepct your opinion, please respect mine. But when did money equate talent, if that were the case, most of the today's rapper's are the greatest musicians who've ever lived. I give J&L much love for being the dynamic Producers that they are, but really... Who would pay money to see Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis...by themselves? ...Crickets chirping... Ok...now who would pay to see Prince by himself? No Contest! ___________________

OH man.
CHRONIC...YOU did it again! you got people fired up!!! devanti's points are SOLID. like i said -money...and commerical success is fine. but it don't mean ONE artist is BETTER. the point is JAM and LEWIS's style is more accessible to the masses. (they do take some risks-somebody made a great point with SOUNDS OF BLACKNESS) prn is more into doing what HE digs. and the fact he's always goes against the GRAIN is more what i LIKE about him. JAM & LEWIS AND prince are THE BEST at what they do. you're right CHRONIC they're RICHER. but PRINCE is the one CRITICS prefer. (for what's it worth!)

Do you think that Prince expected the TRC to sell millions? I think he does what he wants when he wants. If he is not worried about mega record sales why are you worrying about it? Do you think that a 45 year old black man who can play a instrutment has a chance of getting on the radio today?. If you are not some rapping thug radio and record companies have no time for you. I am sure that if Prince wanted to make a living as a songwriter or producer he could but, he never got on that road. Jam and Lewis are great at what they do but they have admitted that as musicians they are not in Prince's league. You really need to take this nosense over to OK Player.com.

I think Prince is a better songwriter, and could well forge a career doing that.J&L are better producers IMO, and have moved on a great deal since 'Control'.On the other hand, Prince shouldn't be so isolated as he is, he's brought nothing new to the table production-wise for a decade.
infact, you might not like this but he sounds like a tired JB/Sly Stone hybrid these days, and when were they last hot?

The only thing some people "Gett Off" on at prince. org is drama. They're loftily against war ideologically('cause it sounds noble) but spend so much time and energy fighting against everybody around them. They can't discuss and debate threads without resorting to taking everything personal(they live offended) or aggressively antagonizing others personally just for the sake of satisfying their vampiric hunger for contention.
Welcome to the real world. Another day in paradise.

Welcome to the real world. Another day in paradise. I think TheChronic has a valid point here.Nobody should hang a guy for expressing what he feels is an honest opinion. would be a boring place if we all agreed though Huh?

Jam and Lewis used to be great producers, but their recent stuff sounds so boring and bland to me.With Janet, they just keep giving her the same type of music on each album (bass-heavy R&B with the occasional samples and other hip-hop elements thrown in).Recent songs that they produced for Mary J.Blige,Chante Moore and Mariah Carey are all formulaic and not much different than everything else that passes for R&B these days.Jam and Lewis did their best music in the 80s,from the years 1982-89.It has been downhill ever since.
With Prince, you always get something new and fresh(with a few exceptions,of course). It may not always be what the public wants to hear, but I would choose his recent music over Jam and Lewis' new stuff anyday.

Wondering if that is actually more of a reflection on Janet, Mary J. Blige, Chante Moore and Mariah Carey? Is it what they want? And in turn, what their record companies want? It would be interesting to see if the duo worked with some "out in left field" artists if they could muster up some unconventional creative juices.

All I know is,when I bought Chante Moore's third CD (which came out in 1999 and featured the lame hit "Chante's Got A Man"),I kept it for about a month then sold it back to the store. It was mostly produced by Jam and Lewis, and it was incredibly bland and boring.A total snoozefest.
