I'm madly in love with Prince's music. What I meant is that I don't like the most part of his recent output (after Lotus Flow3r, which is great, in my opinion), but I'm very interested in other aspects of Prince, like the way he cares for his rights as a musician.

Understood--I also am interested in the way he cares for his rights. I wish he did so in a different way (as some artists do), but it's still part of the overall package that is Prince.

I've always wondered why a guy who hates being recorded in interviews would continue to initiate a process where he'd be required to sit for a sworn, recorded, perhaps even videotaped deposition. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

I agree, he is hurting his own legecy. This is how the younger generation discovers music, other than what the radio brainwashes us with. I understand he wants to control his art, but I just don't think this is the right way to do it. Don't u want to come , 3121. It's gonna be so much fun, 3121. That's where the party be, 3121. Y'all can come if u want to, but u can never leave!

I just want a WORLD TOUR, a GOOD ALBUM, and a decent LIVE CONCERT DVD!!!
The only reason the bootleggers do so much business is because Prince is not giving us the products we want! Bootleg dvds and live audio recordings are often the only way we have to experience these shows, since we can't possibly travel to or afford to go to all of them, especially the older shows that we may have missed back in the day. If Prince would put out a good quality dvd and/or live cd once in a while, we wouldn't need these bootleg copies. If nothing else, the bootleggers are providing historical documentation of Prince's career.
I can understand Prince would be upset if the bootleggers were distributing recordings of his music that he intended to make available himself, and therefore he is losing money, but to be upset that fans are sharing material that they recorded themselves and are distributing for free, just for the joy of sharing and promoting the Prince live experience, he should be glad they are still interested enough to care to do that. Sometimes that's the only way some people get to experience it at all!
Just my two cents | |

Was saying the same thing to someone yesterday but it does give me the opportunity to organise the collection, and of course it is fair to say that there is a vast amount that I have not even heard yet. [Edited 1/31/14 0:15am] If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

Let's face it .. prince was bluffing .. he knows he has no legal right to go after FREE bootlegs .. he knows half the songs on these bootlegs are COVERS sung by his horrible BAND that PRINCE probably owes money for, since he seems to think nobody can cover HIS songs without being sued. Personally I can record anything I want that goes on in my life, including a concert. I paid him to perform for ME not the other way around. Prince can stay home if he doesnt want to be recorded. PRince can stop handing out cassettes of his music if he does not want people to share it.
Prince cultivated the bootleg industry by A. handing out cassettes of unreleased material .. and B. refusing to provide access to live prince recordings to his fans through out the years. Had prince provided live shows on the regular, as many shitty less financially secure bands do all the time with ease, prince may be able to argue that the bootleggers cut into his sales. But he did not. Therefore prince has no legal leg to stand on.
Prince is all flash and no mojo these days. Talking loud and saying nothing .. what a great bunch of publicity he has gotten lately .. too bad no good songs available to capitalize on all the publicity. Hell one solid live soundboard from 1983-1985 would make him a ton right now. But no .. we have this pretzelpoopytragic bull shit. If prince was a real christian he would be IN satans world, not OF it. Money is indeed the root of ALL evil, and more and more Prince shows he is more obsessed with money than making good music or being good to the people that spend half their paycheck on the lil hobbit.

Sell us some live stuff Prince. We are obviously hungry for it!! EDIT: D'oh! Thanks, SuperSoulFighter!! [Edited 1/30/14 8:35am] Don't hate your neighbors. prince needs to sell a million dollars worth of live audience recordings to PROVE that the defendants harmed his personal income .. ok prince there are no more bootlegs online .. now prove that you can sell a million dollars worth of audience bootlegs without them around .. actually .. to be fair .. make that 22 million rich boy
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
We also have the Sign o'the Times film of course. So together with Rave and Las Vegas that makes for 3 live DVDs over a 35 year carreer from someone who has toured almost every year and has an amazing reputation as a live performer. It ain't much! [Edited 1/30/14 8:27am]

but since he can never do it again...doesnt that mean THOSE 'leggers are free to go hog wild with the stuff???
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
The websites sure pulled the material with the threat of their asses getting pounded. People don’t change their ways or get the hint until their ass is on the line. A 22 million lawsuit will do the trick. Good on Prince for dropping the suit when they complied AND for threatening them in the first place. IT HAS TO BE DONE. Piracy is not wholesome fan play. It needs to be treated as the crime that it is.

This story is getting quite a lot of attention - another BBC report: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news...y-25960300
I always thought this would get dropped as it wasn't legally sound, it was more of a scare tactic, publicity stunt - you can read this article too which also points out legal flaws in it http://www.techdirt.com/a...aint.shtml

what makes it not legally sound in your legal opinion, Do tell]

^ Read my post on the original thread, I explain it there - basically very unlikely that you can sue people without knowing their true identity (a website or blog name won't do) or prove that you lost $1 million through just posting a link to a download - the techdirt article elaborates on this too. [Edited 1/30/14 13:22pm]

none of that matters. the point was to scare them and to have them and anyone else blatantly posting material to stop. It worked. They removed the material. Even if you are innocent you still have to hire a lwyer and go through all the expenses and bullshit to defend themselves in court. It was a good call by Prince and worked perfectly.
