A blissed out song, as light as a feather, but sadly it didn't impact the charts - it probably flew in the face of what was popular then, and if Alphabet Street couldn't get near the top then there was no chance of this doing so.
A great video too - I'd love to see a 'making of'. Apparently also directed by the person who did the 'Manchild' video for Neneh Cherry and you can see the similarity.

It was filmed at SIR Los Angeles, Hollywood, CA, USA before the Lovesexy Tour commenced. It was directed by Jean Baptiste Mondino, who had also shot the cover for Lovesexy, and whom had previously directed Jill Jones' video for Mia Boca.
The title I Wish U Heaven floats through the images, in the font made by Margo Chase as used for the song titles on the album.-PrinceVault

such a beautiful opening verse. Aching lyrics that over 4 or so lines capture the doubts that can creep into any relation.
and the longer version of the song is just stunning

I know it's standard definition, but even by those standards the video has never looked sharp to me. I wish it were released on a DVD. Shame as it's one of his most interesting. "I'm much too hot to be cool"

Love this song/video. I thought this, Positivity and Alphabet St stood out on this album and to this day I love them. I wish I could buy the extended mixes as my 12" singles are getting worn out. Also, I bought a DVD on Amazon simply entitled 'Prince' which includes 25 of his videos. I wondered about it's authenticity as the order is sequenced oddly and some of the names are slightly off: 'power generation', 'your man' 'thieves' wannabe your lover', 'another lover' being just a few of them but teh colelction and the quality is 'good'. The video for I Wish U Heaven is great.

Love this song and the video. Although some have said otherwise, I think this was a great choice for a single and could/should have been a hit. The video was also very different from anything Prince had done in the past. It's a shame this wasn't a hit.
BTW, for a great listening experience or the next time your making a playlist, follow the Crystal Ball version of Crucial with the single version of "I wish U Heaven". Works very well back to back.

Prince's resurrection BY DAVID WILD
As the shows went on, Prince became increasingly direct about his intentions. "The first half, I gave it to you because you were expecting it," he said during the third night in Paris. "The second half is what it's all about. It's about how we all dig each other and him."
The second set -- which was played out on a less cluttered stage decorated with giant fake flowers -- featured a number of songs with a higher calling, including "The Cross" and "I Wish U Heaven,"

PrinceLovesexyRolling Stone: 4 out of 5 Stars By David Browne June 16, 1988
Likewise, the swirl of gorgeous harmonies in "I Wish U Heaven" may sound comforting, but it can't conceal the lyrics' nagging sense of uncertainty. "Doubts of our conviction/Follow where we go," he nearly whispers, and sure enough, by the end of the song, the relationship is over. "If I see 11, U can say it's 7," he concludes with more a sigh than a growl. "Still, I wish U heaven."
But it wasn't necessary: the most successful moments on Lovesexy prove that the hardest questions may not lend themselves to easy answers but make for much better music.

Its my humble opinion that Lovesexy is the best record ever released and this is its standout track. Just watching it on Livesexy now. The one track CD, the cover, the whole concept and the music can't be matched on any other album I've ever heard. A genius at his peak -----------------------------------------
