How is Sign O The Times on Dream Factory ?
I thought it was the last song he wrote, and was only added at the last minute ??! And then, obviously, the album title changed to Sign O The Times. At least that's the story I remember reading a few years ago !! Both of these sets look like a mess, but Crystal Ball seems like a better album to me.

No, Sign O The Times was recorded on July 12th 1986, a few days before the final version of Dream Factory was sequenced. U Got The Look was the last minute addition to the Sign O The Times album.

Scarlet Pussy is the only other track (apart from
U Got The Look) to be credited to 'Camille', that wasn't on the 'Camille' album. There's loads of other tracks that feature the vari-speeded 'Camille' voice though.

I wonder: is the consensus that U Got the Look was added at the last minute as a "commercial" track... maybe there was a feeling there weren't enough singles? Just a thought...

It wasn't so much that Prince or WB thought that there weren't enough singles. It was just that Prince had recorded U Got The Look between the time that Crystal Ball was rejected and Sign O The Times was sequenced. He knew he'd written a commercial track, and thought it would be a great addition to the album. Prince actually spend a lot of time trying to get U Got The Look just right. It was recorded as a slower funkier track, but Prince decided to speed it up and turn it into more of a pop song.

Crystal Ball is by the more superior musically and diverse. This album would have been Prince's crowning achievement if released and in a sense it is as it was trimmed down to make SOTT. __________________________________________________

I've always felt Dream Factory was classier and more Pop oriented in a happier mood.
And Crystal Ball as a fresh new powerful direction, based on hardcore Funk and darkness. I tend to lean towards Crystal Ball for that. Then for a mellower happier mood, Dream Factory. It reminds me of The Revolution so much. The whole Parade feel in a way.

Off the record! Duuhh!! Try Kazaa. Not that it's ethical, but, yeah. Try Kazaa. EDIT: Okay, I just heard Wonderful Ass for the first time. WHAT THE HELL is this Lame-o INXS "appreciate-innebriate-the number 8-a perfect slate-pollinate" crap? When did this record come out? It's a DIRECT LIFT of their song... both came out around 87, so I'm wondering if Prince totally RIPPED them off? Could someone out there make some really nice professional-looking covers / CD labels for each of these as originally intended (ie. Dream Factory as a 2-disc set, CB as a 3-disc set) and let us know which versions/lengths of each track were used on CB - I would love to burn my own sets and place them with Camille / Xpectation and albums of that sort... In my opinion, both albums sound somewhat unfinished.
Through their various incarnations, and as they stand, Dream Factory sounds like an album with a tighter focus and musical theme, whereas Crystal Ball sounds like a mishmash of events and ideas. For these reasons, both Sign 'O' The Times and Camille work better as albums than Crystal Ball does. Warner were absolutely right to whittle down Prince's material during this period, both commercially and artistically. Regardless of their motives, his musical genius will have been both clouded and compromised, had Crystal Ball been released. That argument does not hold with Dream Factory.

Both are raw, incohesive colelctions of decent tracks, but I'd have to vote for Crystal Ball.
Size doesn't always matter to me, but in this case everything is pretty good. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου
