Does Prince know....

that he's putting out mediocre music?? Do you all really think that he's actually really pleased with the stuff he's releasing lately, or is it all just for escapism?? When I say "escapism", I am referring to his way of staying out of trouble [with his former "Dirty Mind" self, due to his religion]. I'm not trying to make another "Prince is washed up & sucks now" thread [lurking], because there's plenty already here. I, for some reason, feel as though He knows that he can make better music [WAY better, to be exact], but it's not worth it anymore. Why spend $ he won't recoup? He won't sell enough to please himself, so touring is a much better option @ this point.

What are you're thoughts??

Ah, I get it...so it's either Prince knows he is putting out crap because he feels it's just not worth his time and money to put out a great album (because he knows nobody is buying his albums anymore anyway)...or he doesn't realize he's putting out crap, in which case he's Norma Desmond--a washed-up has-been who doesn't realize his music is now crap and that nobody cares anymore.

Occam's razor suggests a different reality: it's simply that some fans don't like his new music as much as they liked his earlier output.

Not to mention, way too many broken links in your chain of logic.

1) It takes the same amount of money for Prince to put out his "mediocre" albums than it does to put out a great one. So if he's not recouping money either way, profit wouldn't be a determining factor in the quality of music he decides to record.

2) Prince's last 2-3 releases were guaranteed to make him money due to the distribution agreements he had with Target, the Mail On Sunday, etc. So the idea that Prince's fear of not recouping the money spent making an album played a role in how he approached creating that album wouldn't make much sense.

Here's an example:

Time: Why Prince's Free CD Ploy Worked

Prince was reportedly paid $500,000 over and above the royalties for each CD — typically around 10%. Considering that his last album, 3121, sold only 80,000 copies in the U.K., this deal may have earned him more than eight times as much. Plus, Planet Earth — which has gotten fairly good reviews so far — is now in the hands of thousands of people who may never have thought to buy it. Maybe they like what they hear ... and maybe they want more.

[...]For its part, the Mail on Sunday printed, and sold, an extra 600,000 copies in addition to the 2.3 million they usually sell every week. Advertisers find it hard to resist those kinds of sums. And according to managing director Stephen Miron, his office has been flooded with calls from other artists wanting in on the action (as for who, he won't tell). "They are saying they think this is a much more effective and efficient way of building up their business.

Does that sound like a man who fears not recouping any $$?

3) If Prince were using the creation of music to keep himself "out of trouble", mediocre music doesn't keep him out of trouble better than great music does.

4) The whole idea that Prince--who is damn near 60 years old--needs music to keep himself out of trouble is laughable lol...

5) It's far more likely that Prince's interest in releasing albums has waned...the logistics of creating and distributing an album without signing any long-term deals with a label, while also retaining full ownership of the masters, has probably dampened his desire to keep doing so with regularly.

So with that said, I think there's a better question to be asked: Do Prince fans know that it's ok to no longer be as excited about new Prince music as they were 30 years ago, without it meaning anything negative towards Prince?

Does Tittypants know how ridiculous it is to start a new thread every few days declaring Prince is no longer talented? Do you all really think that he's actually so obsessed with Prince that he can't just accept the fact that if Prince's output is no longer to his liking that he should just move on and find another artist to like and stop torturing himself by continually expecting Prince to outdo the classics he made in his prime. Or, does Tittypants really have nothing better to do complain and argue about an artist he no longer likes?

25 years ago I loved Guns N' Roses, but I'm not paying attention to whatever Axel's doing now or going to a fansite (if there even is one) to complain about Chinese Democracy. I. Just. Let. It. Go.

I don't see a problem with the original post. That most likely is the case. He doesn't seem motivated to put out albums in the same manner as before. Whether that's because he's "lost it" or because he doesn't feel "it's worth it anymore" is a different question, but there's obviously been a change.

Personally I think the Internet downloads are presented to us in a way that doesn't motivate that many of us to make such negative comments on them, as they're not meant as any sort of "definitive statements". Some of them have even been labeled as "demos".

There's a point?

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

eek eek eek

It becomes more and more vicious.

First it started with misleading or incomplete attention seeking thread titles ("Let's face it...", "We all know that...", "Does Prince knows...")

Now the posts themselves deny doing whet they're doing falloff

Where will it go next? confused
