MUSICIANSHIP - Is Prince better at funk or rock? I really enjoy Prince's rockier moments, such as The Undertaker, but I never get that same europhoric feeling as I do when he gets on that funk grease. For me, there's nothing better than when Prince gets funky, it's all in his attitiude and the way he comes across.
Does that mean Prince is more in tune with funk than rock, and can therefore deliver funk better as a musician? Or that I simply relate more to Prince's funk than I do to his rock?

I'd just say he's an incredible musician who can do anything and everything.

I don't think he's "better" at either. He pretty much has an authoritative handle on both. Isn't that good enough instead of this versus stuff? This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I'm just wondering whether that's because he's personally more in tune with funk, or whether it's more to do with me and my personal preferences.

I think he can do both rock and funk equal justice in terms of musicianship - but I personally really love the FUNK!

i don't think prince ever really does straight out rock. You might be right. I think Sign O The Times can be one of the funkiest rock songs by Prince, live.

good point, but i still the anticipation between the one and two really makes a funky edge, to an admitedly raw track.
i guess the boundaries of genres with Prince are extremaly hard to judge, not least because he arguably encourages the listener, through the variety in his work, to dimiss such ideas.

It's true, this is a tough one to call. Listening to his rock during the ONA aftershows is flooring me. This guy really is something else.

Yes, it's just amazing how at Nighttown he goes from an all funk jam over to a ballad (Dolphin), then to funk rock (Calhoun Sq) and finally to all (psychedelic) rock (Beautiful Strange)!
The 19 minute funk jam and then Beautiful Strange... like he said, "Can NOBODY mess with my band!" BTW, try to listen very closely to the solo during Beautiful Strange. Not just in the beginning, also in the middle of the solo he screams along with it (at least you can hear this on the GF version)! Amazing!

I don't know about the US aftershows of ONA but the European ones are just out of this world for Prince's guitar playing. Even more so, than his funk. Or maybe, he's just playing his rock with more soul nowadays. Good morning to you! Damn!! The 19 minute funk jam and then Beautiful Strange... like he said, "Can NOBODY mess with my band!" He's at his best when he combines them all. That's one of the things that makes him so great.

I agree with Mr.7, that Prince is better at funk and rock, because I believe he's the man,and he can do whatever he feels like. When it comes to music,he is the best at any kind of music that he play.

That's tough...which are rock? They sound funky, so they're better than rock...which are funk? They rock...
Hence, prince.org exits... Fear is the mind-killer.
