The world's most talented artist and yet so amateuristic and childish ...

How hard can it be to communicate in normal, direct and understandable fashion in stead of "teasers", "cryptic anouncements", or talk to his audience through others.

The "mystique" around Prince once felt mesmarizing and seemed genuine but, I guess I have to agree with what most orgers probably have known for ages ...

Prince had become a charicature of himself ...

I feel like a few different things could be going on here in terms of the delay:

1. He had an album ready to go that included tracks like Down, Ain't Gonna Miss U, and 2Y2D (all previewed at the Dakota over the PA). When he formed 3RDEYEGIRL, he was inspired to make new music with them and decided to make another record to release along side the existing one.
2. As recording went on, he decided to scrap the Prince record and move the rockier (and hopefully best) songs over to the 3RDEYEGIRL project (it was mentioned on Twitter or Dr. FB that the girls were recording new parts for Down, now retitled The Breakdown), deciding to make a bigger appearance on it than what was initially planned (previous reports stated he would only be doing vocals on 2 of the tracks).
3. After assembling the huge new horn section, he became inspired to record new music featuring them. Perhaps some of the more horn-friendly songs from the initial Prince record as well as new stuff (Shades Of Umber?) would be included on a seperate record from the 3RDEYEGIRL release.
4. At one point (according to supposed insiders) Prince was entertaining the idea of releasing both records simultaneously, and perhaps rethought the idea choosing to instead focus the attention on 3RDEYEGIRL, which will be coming "soon." Maybe another record will follow later in the year?
5. Prince is feeling a little gunshy. It's been nearly 7 years since his last worldwide release (Planet Earth), a half a decade since the last major US release (Lotus Package), and nearly 4 years since the last official album (20Ten, limited release in Europe). I was reading the reviews for 20Ten today just out of curiosity, and they're pretty terrible. Bad press like that might inspire Prince to want to make the next one count, as it has to be disheartening for someone in his position (a legend) to have the reputation that his new music sucks.
6. Prince feels that by waiting longer between releases the public will appreciate them more. Not always true.
