I guess for me itsba toss up between shockadelica...its funky, fun, danceable, funny, sexy, perverse....its like all of the above... She'll make ya beg. ....and How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore. Great songwriting totally unconventional for the time period. Piano...check. bass drum...check. Xpress record and....GO. .....and United States of Division. Really...it doesn't get much better than this..... ...aw hell I can't maintain....this song is as terrible as shockadelica is good. A true low point of a very good musicology period.

Funny how everyone's picks are from the eighties. Makes you realise that decade was a golden age of b-sides and the output since has dwindled and died.

Particularly since digital music makes b-sides obsolete and antiquated.

Sadly, I haven't listened to it in years because the only copy I have is on an old laptop. "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

La, La, La, He, He, Hee (highly explosive) Shockadelica She's Always In My Hair
and I would say that Girl is up there too. From the first spin I thought it was very cool. "Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"

You just need to add 17 Days and you have a perfect list. Honourable mention to She's Always In My Hair, of course.
I also love Power Fantastic, but it wasn't actually a b-side even though it was included on the b-sides collection. Obviously, Prince knew it was dynamite and just wanted to get it out there one way or another. 17 Days. The elastic bass line, the warm swells of keyboard, the light reggae rhythm guitar...it's not just my favorite b-side but one of my three or so favorite Prince songs in general. Of course Erotic City and She's Always In My Hair are great too.
My fave of the 90s is Violet the Organ Grinder, and my favorite of the 2000s is Magnificent. [Edited 12/27/13 5:48am]

The LONG versions. That would be my top 3 as well. I also like She's Always in My Hair, but in that case, the longer version isn't better. It's those funk jams that work best when they're longer. A 3 minute pop song, however, doesn't improve when you make it 6 minutes.

That's just because there's no more vinyl/CD singles these days. When Prince (or any other musician) just releases the occasional song on the net, there is no "A" or "B" sides. Having said that, I think Da Bourgeoisie is as much fun as those old b-sides. [Edited 12/28/13 9:20am] [Edited 12/28/13 9:26am]

Agree with so many of these but surprised no one has mentioned I Wish U heaven pts 1,2 and 3 Remember putting that on my record player for the first time in high school and getting to the end of the traditional version and thinking this is just going to be 7 more minutes of strings and falsetto then came two dramatically different takes on the song. "Take this beat. I don't mind. Got plenty of others. They so fine."

. This is definitely my favorite B-side. I listened to this OVER and OVER and OVER back in the day. Hell, now that it's been planted in my purple brain, I'll probably throw it on when I get home.

Absolutely disgusting. This is what stopped Prince from being more popular. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

What's the big deal with la la la, hee hee hee? It's funky, but I always saw it as pretty disposable.
P.S. Just listened to some b-sides the other day and I think SAIMH might have the edge over 17 Days which is maybe a bit too poppy in comparison. It's close though. God - Incredible vocal performance. He's feeling something. She's Always In My Hair - Should have been on Around the World in A Day and a the first single. Erotic City - It became a hit anyway. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.
