I'm wondering why people were freaking out over Da Bourgeoisie when songs like this always existed.

At least part of it is that "Work that Fat" is an outtake. Prince said stupid/juvenile/potentially offensive stuff on the track, but then didn't release it.

One could get into whether there's a difference in general in the targets of the songs (the obese might not be as organized as the LGBT community, to begin with), but the most important issue probably has to do with the readily and officially available nature of "Da Bourgeoisie."

As far as "Work That Fat"--is anything in that original, or even close to it? Aren't all the jokes older than God? I haven't listened in quite a while, but I didn't find it a particularly interesting example of Prince's humor.

I was going to say that too about other artists too. But what it reminded me more of was comedy like Richard Pryor and every comedian ever. Obviously not politically correct. Which as mentioned here, everyone is too head over heels for. Its just meant to be funny.

Wait? What song did I defend? I said "Work that Fat" was an uninteresting recitation of a series of old jokes (I didn't mention the fact that it doesn't even have a distinct musical idea, but is just built on a rhythm track he used much better elsewhere). He didn't release it, and he shouldn't have. It's one of the few songs by Prince that I routinely click past if it comes up when I'm listening, even if I'm listening by myself. It is stupid and boring, showcasing absolutely none of Prince's skills as a writer, producer, player, or singer--it doesn't show him doing much of anything, including being funny. They are bad jokes (as in quality), they're old jokes, they're mean jokes (but if they were clever or new, then that might give them a pass). The song does show that at least occasionally he's right when he leaves something in the vault, but that's about the only thing he did right with it.

So--just to clarify: I am not saying anything positive about "Work That Fat"--nor am I defending it. I just think the fact that one song was released and the other wasn't partially explains why one has gotten a lot of offended reaction, and the other hasn't.

BUT I COULD BE WRONG:

Just looked to see about previous threads on "Work That Fat"--people do seem remarkably amused by it, with a few people objecting to what they see as a pattern of Prince making fun of the overweight. So maybe I'm wrong, and people just think it's more okay to joke about fat folks.

Okay. Sorry I attempted to respond to your thread. I don't know how being bored by lazy humor (remember, my objection wasn't related to it being offensive, just unoriginal) makes me self-righteous, and I've never said anything anywhere about Prince's career as a whole (or even lately) sucking--I just mentioned the Passaic show because it's the lastest addition to my collection, not because I'm stuck in that period.
