Work That Fat

Songs so prefect and hilarious.

*

"Yo yo, where all the fat girls at
Get on the dance floor baby, and let me work that fat
Yeah, let me work that fat
Thats how we like 'em, fat and proud
'Cause when they sit down, they sit all around
The whole house, side walking and everything else
I'll be damned baby if you dont sit on yourself
But thats what I like you for
I take you to the crib you got stuck on the door"

*

I'm wondering why people were freaking out over Da Bourgeoisie when songs like this always existed.

PC fever is very catchy these days.

On that note....its not right that all these kittens get exploited on YouTube without proper compensation or credit. No one even knows these kittens and cat's names...they appear...we go awwww or LOL....and they get NOTHING. It ain't right.

I've always found the song hilarious & offensive @ the same time. Especially the food stamp line [definitely offensive, imo].

At least part of it is that "Work that Fat" is an outtake. Prince said stupid/juvenile/potentially offensive stuff on the track, but then didn't release it.

People may or may not have been offended had they heard it (and obviously many of us around here have), but he never decided it was ready for anyone to hear, there's no indication he ever wanted anyone to hear it. It's not, officially, in the world for people to hear.

With "Da Bourgeoisie," he floated it out there for free, heard (one assumes) the criticism that came from it, then released it for sale (with those horns). He stood behind it as a finished, ready for public consumption song, even after he knew some people were offended (whether people are interpreting the song correctly or not when they feel it's homophobic).

One could get into whether there's a difference in general in the targets of the songs (the obese might not be as organized as the LGBT community, to begin with), but the most important issue probably has to do with the readily and officially available nature of "Da Bourgeoisie."

As far as "Work That Fat"--is anything in that original, or even close to it? Aren't all the jokes older than God? I haven't listened in quite a while, but I didn't find it a particularly interesting example of Prince's humor.

lol Honestly [& I'm not trying to start anything with you whatsoever], but why defend the song? lol It doesn't matter how offended anybody is. Eminem has gone leaps & bounds FAR beyond this crappy fun bootleg, when it comes to lyrical content. lol

I was going to say that too about other artists too. But what it reminded me more of was comedy like Richard Pryor and every comedian ever. Obviously not politically correct. Which as mentioned here, everyone is too head over heels for. Its just meant to be funny.

shocked Wait? What song did I defend? I said "Work that Fat" was an uninteresting recitation of a series of old jokes (I didn't mention the fact that it doesn't even have a distinct musical idea, but is just built on a rhythm track he used much better elsewhere). He didn't release it, and he shouldn't have. It's one of the few songs by Prince that I routinely click past if it comes up when I'm listening, even if I'm listening by myself. It is stupid and boring, showcasing absolutely none of Prince's skills as a writer, producer, player, or singer--it doesn't show him doing much of anything, including being funny. They are bad jokes (as in quality), they're old jokes, they're mean jokes (but if they were clever or new, then that might give them a pass). The song does show that at least occasionally he's right when he leaves something in the vault, but that's about the only thing he did right with it.

So--just to clarify: I am not saying anything positive about "Work That Fat"--nor am I defending it. I just think the fact that one song was released and the other wasn't partially explains why one has gotten a lot of offended reaction, and the other hasn't.

BUT I COULD BE WRONG:

Just looked to see about previous threads on "Work That Fat"--people do seem remarkably amused by it, with a few people objecting to what they see as a pattern of Prince making fun of the overweight. So maybe I'm wrong, and people just think it's more okay to joke about fat folks. confused

Of course, Tittypants, I now realize that you might have meant "why does the song need to be defended just because people are offended"?

It probably doesn't--either people like it and find it funny, or they don't. The original poster asked why people were getting all worked up about "Da Bourgeoisie" when Prince has tracks like this in his history--I was just saying why I thought that was.

And I have now spent more time talking typing about this track then I ever spent listening to it (I think the same is true of "Da Bourgeoisie"). And, I strongly suspect, more time than Prince spent on either one of them.

Cool--now I'll go back to thinking about more important and interesting parts of Prince's history. Like that Passaic Controversy show.

Good, we dont need you to talk about fat bootie girls. You can take your self righteous ass and go discuss things like... like how much Prince's career sucks ass.

Okay. Sorry I attempted to respond to your thread. I don't know how being bored by lazy humor (remember, my objection wasn't related to it being offensive, just unoriginal) makes me self-righteous, and I've never said anything anywhere about Prince's career as a whole (or even lately) sucking--I just mentioned the Passaic show because it's the lastest addition to my collection, not because I'm stuck in that period.

Enjoy the track. Knock yourself out.
