Copying Prince's songs

In regards to bootlegs and requesting copies on the Org, there's something I'm wondering about.

If I have been a member of the NPGMC during year one and year two, but was not able to download all of the songs, then is it acceptable to get copies from others by email or on CDs?

The way I see it, if I was a member for those years, then I have a right to get copies of those MP3s however which way. Basically, I have a right to get copies of those MP3s for myself.

The next question is, how would I get copies from somebody? Personally, I would not copy any of these tracks to a fan that was not a member, and I would understand likewise from other members, so how would somebody prove to another fan that they were a member? It's a technical rather than a legal question, so please don't block this thread Ian!

It means you are a thief. When your money goes directly to an artist then you should pay it if you want the music.

It's all about morals.

Quite a moral dilemna I am in now. As I said I have the right to copies of those songs, so it shouldn't matter what dubious path it took to come to me, should it?

Hey you,

considering that Prince places so much importance on bootlegging and copyright, then this is a fair question to ask. Personally, well am I am only me, I have a certain level of respect for this particular artists rights, and so here I am trying to discuss this topic.

Well since you seem to strugle with this issue a lot don't get a copy. I wouldn't want to be held responsible for your sleepless nights in case you regret your decision. God...

No sleepless nights over here, thanks for your consideration. Actually, I've got 99% of the downloads. I was mainly interested in discussing the issue of copying when somebody has already bought the rights to a song. Whether there is a differentiation. It's an important issue in the age of digital copying.

I'm sorry you're not able to think about something or argue a point.

Well if you "bought the rights to a song", what's the fuckin' problem? What is your point?

It is a big issue. Prince has always had an issue with copying and copyright, so what's wrong with discussing that when he is a sole artist out of the grips of the corporate record companies?

I think the deal with NPGMC is that once you've paid for the songs, you can reproduce them as you see fit, for your own personal use, so long as you don't make them available for non-members.

From memory, that was posted somewhere on the site in terms and conditions.

So if you download the audio file you can burn it on to a disk, copy to an MP3 player, etc, so long as it is for your sole use.

Re your question, I guess if you've paid for it, you have a right to it, and how you obtain it is a moot point. Now the original site no longer hosts your files, and you can prove your membership, I don't see why a fellow member couldn't hook you up, if willing. And I can't see a legal reason why Prince would be against that.

However, I've not really thought about it. Maybe because it is for your sole use, you can't share it with other members? Who knows?

Maybe you could email the NPGMC? Any guesses what their reply would be?!

Thanks for a sensible response cosmicslop. I know my question or argument was weakly put, but still the responses I received show how little tolerance people have. It also showed contempt for Prince's rights to his music and copying his songs outside of the club.

Even if my secret agenda of this thread was to obtain some of these songs, what's the problem with that, me being a fully paid member? It wasn't my agenda though.

How does somebody prove their membership? I could lend somebody my fam name and password so they could check, but of course that's a bad idea.
