The War I think it's my favourite Prince track of all. I have the CD version but can't remember how I got hold of it. Has anyone heard the 45 minute version and is it worth finding? Is there a video of it's recording circulating?

I'm unaware of an unedited audio recording circulating, and no video recording. ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

Great track. A touch of gold from an era of sludge.

I would absolutely love to find an unedited version of this song. It's easily one of my favorite live tracks. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

The unedited version isn't circulating. Some people who attended the show said here that it was very boring and repetitive and that the editing and overdubs of the released version made it much better. I don't see it so much as a "song" than as an album in itself. Prince himself twice classified it as an album in his official website's discographies (though he later rereleased it as a "single"). I love it too, it's one of these rare times when Prince really went outside of his comfort zone and did something really experimental, and the result is artistically brilliant if u ask me. It's sort of his homage to Funkadelic as well IMHO, but it's more than that, it's Prince going conceptual and just like N.E.W.S. or Crystal Ball (the song), it shows that Prince could be much more than what he is in terms of musical audacity if he wanted too. It's also somewhat of an important piece of art for me on a personal level: I was quite young when it was released and that somewhat mystic spoken work pamphlet had a great influence of my writing process back then, it was an inspiration for several works I'm kind of proud of, or at least that were important in my evolution as a writer back then. I remember right after 09/11, I spent half a night writing a very political/spiritual 10 pages-long poem, listening to The War in a loop for 4 or 5 hours, in the dark with only the light of candles and my computer screen. That's such a lovely memory

Did he? Was that in the NPGMC store after Musicology? The sad thing is I probably bought it, but I'll be damned if I know where it is. That was like 4 PCs ago...plus, weren't those tracks riddled with DRM? If so, that explains why it's lost. Booooo. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

I dig it, it's not one I pull out that often, but it's definately a better 20 minutes spent than, say the 12" version of America. Keep your headphones on.

I remember when my family and I lived in the USA(Marshall, Minnesota to be exact) and one day receiving the tape version in my mailbox at the time. It was a "peace offering" of sorts to everyone who endured the Crystall Ball merchandizing fiasco a year previously. The thing is, I never ordered Crystall Ball from 1-800-New-Funk, but got it in a record store!!!! . But I must have been in their database from when I ordered the Emancipation Lyric Book, so I was ecstatic when I received The War cassette in my mail one Saturday morning!!!
I have since downloaded the track(from the old Royal Hub), burned it to CD and its one of the regular CDs I play in my car!!

The Musicology Store downloads were all Microsoft DRM files. I still have the files, but they haven't been playable for a looonnnngggg time. They weren't burnable either from a Mac (not that I could find).

Ah, that's right, it was a CD single through 1-800-New-Funk. Kinda surprised I didn't order it ... Must have been too pricey for me at the time. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

I checked in here one day & someone posted that The War CD single had just become available at 1-800-NEW Funk so I went there and bought a copy pronto. I think it was $25. The next day it was sold out. It's around here somewhere.

I was there that night and it is definitly an easier listen on CD than it was live. Not that it was bad. In fact it was quite cool. However, it's not like you can dance to it or anything. I remember having to grab a seat towards the back of the room after the first 20 minutes or so. I love when Prince gets experimental.

I guess my ex-boyfriend received that tape then? 99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.
