Every P song in CHRONOLOGICAL RECORDING order?

For some reason, earlier this year, I became slightly obsessed with revisiting Prince's music, by putting every song into order by recording date. I got hooked on the idea of hearing his songcraft change as the years progressed. I figured it might inject new life into tunes I've heard a bazillion times by now.

.

So using PrinceVault as a guide, I made a spreadsheet and started mucking about over the summer. I fudged a few things here and there... for instance, if a song was listed as being recorded in "early 1994", then I set the date as March 1 1994. If the listed date was "late October", then I set the date to October 20. Stuff like that. Not 100% accurate, but I knew I wouldn't get it all right to begin with.

.

Also, if there were multiple versions of songs - say if he recorded a demo but then passed the song onto another artist - I tried to account for those with "Version #1", "Version #2", etc.

.

Cut to a couple of weeks ago, and I now have something like 1000 songs listed, by date, and I'm preparing playlists accordingly.

.

Has anyone else out there tried doing this? I'm just curious if any other big-time P fan has gone through the immense time-wasting that I've gone through since the beginning of June.

Once I feel it's pretty complete, I'd be more than happy to share. But I'm not quite sure how I would go about putting a 1000+ line document up on the ol' Org here.

i did that with my collection of outtakes. it took me a long time and i had to sift

through a lot of material and online references. but i got there in the end. then

i wanted to start going through all my material again and only include the best

possible soundquality versions of tracks. like replacing the parade outtakes for

the ones on the boot that came out a couple of years ago with those fantastic

soundquality versions. but i lost interest somewhere at the beginning of all that

and have to revisit it. i dubbed the project "The Digital Garden".

Great title, I've used that for a cd compilation (of online tracks) i did back in the day.

Actually my project is a chronological list of RELEASED material (sorted by release date, not recording), you can find the link below.

But what you want to do has been done already by Scififilmnerd back in 2009, it's as accurate as can be and it's there: http://prince.org/msg/7/320445

As said above, my project is a little different, but Scififilmnerd did an astonishing job at doing a chronological recording order list.

Holy CRAP, databank! Scififilmnerd's list is broken out by projects and studios and artists... Mine is just a dinky Excel spreadsheet with a few columns!

.

I am BLOWN AWAY. I guess I missed this when it first came around. Thanks for hipping me to all this info.

I did the same with my Elvis Presley collection. I have made an Excel with over 10 000 lines, all based on the books "Elvis sessions" I, II and III.

For Prince it is much harder because I only have the book "princevault" with all the dates in it, but it only goes to 2001 or something.
