might be funny, but i'm co-signin on that one...evillol

my outlook on p's videos is this: they're more like cartoons in a way than super-blown-out video extravaganzas, and frankly if p did any of his videos like that, it'd take away from the song.

Disagree that ALL his videos r crap. Cream is probably the best video I've ever seen. Given that I don't care much for "record commercials". But, still they ARE an art form.
Of which "Cream" beautifully demonstrates.

Prince's music videos have always been f-cking sh-t.

F-cking Sh-t... I don't think that's possible.

That's nearly an "oxymoron" as a matter of fact.

Livning = f-cking Dead waste = sh-t..

BTW:

Mattola pulled "the plug" on Michael Jackson's last CD because he was spending too much of Sony's money to produce videos and promotion.

Mike was also flying everywhere and taking photos with certain wannebe Gangster Rappers to command respect from the Hip Hop Market..

Mike wanted to spend millions per video to recreate the effect of a "Thriller", "MoonWalker", or "Remember the Time". Mattola was not buying it. They allowed Mike to spend a certain amount in order to pressure him into modesty. (Mattola's tactics may have gotten him in troubl though...)

Watch what happens with Madonna... Maverick's gone. "Music" wasn't the follow-up to "Ray of Light" that The WB hoped for.. I've read her comments about WB's lack of respect of her "career".

If I can find the article, I'll post it..

Videos are why The Spice Girls were successful..

I think it is because Prince holds the music video in contempt as an art form, instead seeing it as pimping his music.

Hence why the only acceptable vids producced were around the D&Ps era, when he swallowed his pride and worked his record hard.

Also, he views it as a function of the record company to promote his material, and the video is just a promotional tool, hence his lacklustre approach to it.

Afterall, none of his hereoes had to make vids to sell their records. It is a generational thing, perhaps - he grew up listening to George, Jimmy, Sly etc in an era when vids were not important, whereas a lot of his fans grew up in the MTV era, and expect to see a quality vid to sell them the song. The packaging has become as important as the product, the image over the musicianship - you can see this would be anathema to Prince.

The irony is that his global success can in part be attributed to the success of the movie PR which was essentially a long form video.

Spot on.

Prince is a musician, and I presume thinks that he should play music, not make videos to sell his records.

Of course now a days you can't have a single be a hit without a video, and anyone who doesn't play by those rules gets left behind.

Video killed the radio star.

nay, nay, and thrice nay!

You might agree with Miabocca, but the fact his assistant told Kevin Smith he makes videos for nearly every song he records, and then stores them in his damn Vault, clearly indicates he doesn't hold videos in contempt. Therefore his opening paragraph makes the rest of his post somewhat redundant.

He likes making them, Prince is vain as we know.Unfortunately he doesn't see what we do, CRAP Videos!

Well I think you all are wrong. Record companies make the artist pay for the videos. If your records are selling expensive videos are fine. If your records are not selling the artist or group is going to get stuck owing millions of dollars to the record company.

I think this is the reason most of Prince's videos were cheap.

Bollocks, it's quite obvious that Prince has a taste for cheap kitsch, just look @ his clothes, movies, album covers etc... .Apart from his dancing, the visual artforms aren't really his forte.

The Diamonds & Pearls/NPG era vids r particularly awful,"They r silly, cheap and beneath his abillity."

Naturally, there are exceptions. However, Prince seems to have always had a 'problem' translating his musical artistry into a compelling visual document.

The music community dismissed his videos as among the worst and this dichotomy was frustratingly heightened by the fact that his music was usually very popular. It's almost like you were forced to sit through his shit.

shrug

hmm.its more about the music. But he looks so good he's gotta show his funky little self once in a while. Its really all we get besides the music which is ALOT,(how many other musicians mix funk, blue, & romance with horns, quitar, & Piano the man doesn't need to do a video to translate artistyr. & isnt it more about the music not the video. since he doesn't really care to give the one on one communication side which is understandable. greatest romance latly i thought that was pretty sweet ecspecially showing a pregnant women in re: to adam & eve & why adam never left eve! the Greatest Romance..anyway art is seen in many different way my hostile art friend.

While this makes a LOT of sense smile I still think he's got some pretty good ones under his belt:

Cream
Gett Off
Diamonds & Pearls
Batdance
The One
7
PartyMan
TGRES
U Got the Look

*

These are either cheap or w/o much imagination or both (lol) but still fun IMO:

Raspberry Beret
Kiss
Sexy MF
Love 2 the 9's
Morning Papers
Mountains
America
Alphabet St.
Automatic (the hat y'all, THE HAT!! horny )
Glam Slam
Thieves in the Temple
When Doves Cry
My Name is Prince

*

The only one I can think of that's just sheer crap is Come On, SOTT (wasn't that the one w/ text only??? neutral ) & the Gold Experience vids. Most seem to fall under the cheap/unimaginative category, which qualifies his videos on the whole for mediocrity NOT suckery IMO... biggrin

Not until the BatMan Era has He really added much to His Videos. He has had a few that were alright but overall He really didn't add much to it.VIdeos do play a Helluva Part to the overall Musical Expereince especially if a Artist doesn't Tour or doesn't come your way on a Tour.it can leave a lasting Impression.

I can't believe i am reading this. Come On may s*ck, but the SOTT video was one of his best videoclips ever. If not his best. The combination with the flow of the typography and the lyrics, makes this one so special.

At the time it was a groundbreaking video, and it was widely respected by any video director possible.

Think again! smile

I admit I don't remember a whole lot about it but it seems to me that a text-only music video breaks ground in levels of boredom & lack of effort. smile I don't really care how widely respected it was, I only care if it makes me wanna see it again. And since I can't even really remember it, it had zero effect on me - pretty unsuccessful, no? nod But I'm glad you enjoy it smile What do I know, I'm just now feeling an appreciation for the SOTT movie lol
