Under the Cherry Moon Reviews

http://movies.yahoo.com/m...erry-moon/

Kinda surprised that the "critics" seemed overwhelmingly positive here. It's almost like only peeps from Prince.org posted responses. lol

I actually think that of all the reviews, the average score was 4 stars out of 5. Seriously??? smile

Just makes me wonder if Prince had his people long on and do some "reviewing". smile

Wouldn't surprise me.

I still wish it would be released in color. I mean... why not? Worse movies have been re-released on DVD and Blu Ray.

Personally, I really enjoyed the movie... and still do. But if I was a non-Prince fan, I'd probably be like... "Seriously, little man. Seriously????" wink

I gotta visit Nice one day!!!

By the way... you might have to have Yahoo! account to see the reviews.

The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

It's crazy that threads about UTCM reviews will pop-up every week or so lol lol lol particularly since threads for PR reviews never pop-up. Were there thousands of reviews for UTCM or what?

Actually I think I've shown that movie to maybe 5 or 6 persons in my life, mostly girlfriends and all non-fans, and they all loved it. It's really not so bad, it's got a charm of its own.

I truly think this movie would have fared better if it had been in color. The 80s was a very bright, colorful decade. In 1986,a black and white movie was a hard sell.It kept alot of people away.

I don't think b&w was the problem. Paper thin characters and plot come to mind. Prince is not a screenwriter/director/producer the way he is a songwriter/bandleader/producer. He should have allowed professional filmmakers to do their thing, but overweening ego convinced him he could just as easily do those jobs. Critics are a dime a dozen, major studios like Warner Bros. had their own on staff. UTCM could have topped Purple Rain easily in the right hands, but alas that was not the case. It's a nice looking film though, and I love the music.

Awful, awful movie. Awful cinematic follow-up to Purple Rain. Ego out of control. Fitting beginning of the downward spiral of his fame.

Hard to believe he was capable of doing worse than this movie. Well, that is until I saw Graffiti Bridge.

I know UTCM was universally panned, but I loved it from day one. I went to see it a dozen times on its release.

Some of the reviews were merciless.I recall one review where the critic wrote...

"in black and white,Prince begins to remind you of something that your biology teacher made you dissect"

disbelief

How in the world is UTCM the begining of the "downward spiral" of his fame?...Do you remember what came after that? Right after that movie Prince put out what might be his best album of his career in the SOTT album--and the concert film for it helped offset the stench of UTCM...then there was the Lovesexy album and the subsequent King Of All Bootlegs at the time of the Black Album. Someone spent over $1,000 for an original album at an auction, fer cripes sakes lol..Then the Batman soundtrack which, while not his best, definitely didn't cause any type of "downard spiral" to his fame. Quite the opposite, in fact--it jumpstarted a brief upturn in his popularty. Then of course there was the D&P album, with three top 20 singles...hardly evidence of a man whose fame was supposed to have been spiralling downard for the previous 5 years.

If there was a beginning to any downward spiral, it was the whole "Slave"/TAFKAP moment. It wasn't UTCM movie, no more than Body Of Evidence was the beginning of a "downward spiral" for Madonna lol. Nobody expected either of these guys to be movie stars...as long as the public still felt their music still kicked ass, all was fine.

The movie was fine when you consider how many hats the kid had to wear. Writer/Director/Actor etc., etc., and it was just overwhelming because one person can't really do all those jobs effectively. Nonetheless I give it 4 out of 5. In addition, here we are 25+ years later and one of the best things to come out of that movie was "Better with Time" which was written about Krisitn Thomas. I give that song 4.875 out of 5. Shit, nothings perfect except sometimes.

Why settle for a star?

Exactly. This movie was a warning sign that Prince really is not a good director.Graffiti Bridge brought that point home.I think, after Purple Rain, his ego went out of control and he assumed that he could do everything himself. With a skilled director,UTCM might have fared much better.
