Animated lyrics in a video: was Prince the first to use this technique?

Hi guys!

On an Italian music channel I’ve seen the Loose Ends’ video for their 1985 hit Hangin’ On A String. In this video images are alternated with lyrics, using the same animated graphics that are in Sign “O” The Times. Do U know anythin’ about it?

Thank U!

Sign o The Times came out in 1987, so no.

Although it's often dismissed, Sign is my favourite Prince video. Fits the tone of the song perfectly; it offers no solutions, just a bleak commentary.
Sign is without doubt Prince's most hopeless, despondent lyric.

Did someone else ever see this “lyrics version” of Loose Ends’ video I’m talkin’ about?

There are no solutions, ESPECIALLY religion. As for the video, I understand what you're saying, but it doesn't strike me as interesting at all. Perhaps the idea is cool but the execution seems a little lacking. That's just how it strikes me. There is no good or bad, just personal taste.

Yep. I love it for it's starkness, just like the song. Saying that I'm really not a fan of music videos at all, so maybe it's just me. Lol
When people try to slag Prince off to me I just laugh and tell them that all the reasons they hate him are the very reasons I love him. That goes for image and music...well not so much these days sadly.

The video is unworthy of the song, in my opinion.

I didn't even know there was a video for SotT until I bought the video collection back in the 90s, and I was rather bummed out by it. A pale imitation of 'Money for Nothing', in my opinion.

There's a certain cold, mechanical-ness about the video that I like. I agree with robert. It suits the song well.

Yeah, I couldn't imagine a storyboard video, scenes of war and destruction etc.
I like the way you're just hit with the lyric.
Simple Minds did that with their cover and the video (and cover) is effing awful.

Hi everybody!
Well...we were just struggling to understand if the purple one was or not the first to use animated texts technique in videoclips, since recently we have discovered on tv a Loose Ends video which is very similar to SotT, and we are not able to date it. So the question is: who stole from whom???

You could trace the idea back to Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues video?

AFAIK WB made this video, since Prince was not willing to do one. It was also released after the single had already been out for a while. You should google the director, Bill Konersman.

That certainly sounds right. In my opinion, the video always had a certain 'un-Princely' odour to it...

Dylan’s video (actually a clip from the documentary film Dont Look Back) is considered 2 be 1 of the forerunners of the proper music video. And probably it could be somehow an ancestor of Sign “O” The Times. However the Wikipedia page about Dylan’s video reports a long list of other videos that have imitated or have been influenced by it, but Prince is not mentioned.

Hi guys! At last I’ve managed 2 come 2 a conclusion!!! I can prove that Prince’s video Sign “O” The Times is NOT the first lyrics music video, though it’s probably the most well-known. And besides the solution to my doubt has nothin’ 2 do with Loose Ends!... Starting from dualboot’s suggestion I’ve come across this video which dates back to 1981! It’s a video for a song by Brian Eno and David Byrne, Moonlight In Glory, from their album My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts. U can see it here http://www.youtube.com/wa...P9R9b7uHu4

Thank u ev’ryboby and may u live 2 see the dawn!
