Purple Rain 30th Anniversary: Will P surprise us? So the 30th anniverary of the hugely iconic and truly incredible 'Purple Rain' is fast approaching. This album alone secured Prince's place as a titan of the music world and propelled him to become one of the world most recognised and revered musical icons. Will it simply pass by or will P surprise us all with a new release (remaster, b-sides etc)? Let me know what you guys think! I got two sides... and they're both friends.

Maybe with another version of Let's go crazy this time with the Npg horns Welcome 2 The Dawn

He doesn't "live in the past" lol..... Which means he will more than likely finally participate in some capacity with an event commemorating the release of the film/album.

You want it, but he won't, and when he did, you wish he didn't.

bet he do... bet he cashes those checks still. and he sure likes to sing those decades old songs of his... "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

Yes. He will have a version of Let's Go Crazy with all the saxophones from the Musicology version, and have all guitar parts removed. He also will have an instrumental version of Purple Rain with all the vocals removed, other than a running loop of Shelby shouting "Put Your Hands Up" at the top of her lungs.
Ok, enough stupid jokes. It is very unlikely Prince will do ANYTHING. He just doesn't care, and if you look in the bargain bins of most Best Buy locations, you will see tons of remasters from other artists showing that very few of these remaster projects actually make money. Universal made a little money off of the U2 remasters, but old people no longer buy music in masses. They may buy one greatest hits package, but not single albums. Young people buy a lot more, but hardly buy much from older artists. There is not a huge economic reason to do anything. As Prince and Warners bickered over his masters, in time, the masters won't own Prince, and Prince won't really own the masters..they will only have value to a few die hards like me and anybody reading this post...
A Purple Rain Super Deluxe Box with 10 cds and 5 dvds limited to 10000 copies might be a slick way to make a few dollars profit, but that's a pipe dream. Purple Rain's anniversary likely will come without anything. I'd love to see the Deluxe set and a tour with the Revolution and the Time...but it's won't happen. Prinice just doesn't care!

There will be a Purple Rain 2-CD Deluxe Edition fillled with outtakes,12" versions, etc.
There will also be a Prince and The Revolution reunion tour next summer.
The movie itself will be re-released to select movie theatres.

The movie, album, imagery, time period is such a defining part of American popular culture, it can't simply blow by without a murmur I got two sides... and they're both friends.

If it were any other Prince album, in any other year, I would immediately agree with most of the above comments. The guy has a track record of apparently ignoring/obfuscating the anniversaries of albums. If you look at the 20th Anniversary, he used the opportunity to promote a new album instead. But the actual tour did heavily focus on Purple Rain. I have no doubt he'll want to use the opportunity of the inevitable free press that the anniversary will generate to push a new album. But it might only be a 3EG album that he promotes and for a reason. If the master of this album genuinely reverts to Prince this year, he'd want to make some money off it. It's also the only Prince album other than SOTT that might make some money for a record company willing to foot the bill (which Prince would probably want). What they wouldn't want is Prince openly competing against such a remaster. If an album is released at the start of 2014 and is a 3EG album but with Prince singing, I'll be quietly optimistic. and of course... 2 + 0 + 1 + 4 = 7 "Had to get off the boat so I could walk on water..."

How cool would this be? Siiiigh. I COULD see P n 3rdeyegirl performing a PR-centric show with the Revolution guesting on PR and IWD4U/BABYIMASTAR, shown on HBO or somewhere high profile. That would be enough for me.

The coolest thing would be to release a directors cut of the film and re-release in theaters and DVD. I would buy it in a heartbeat, take my teens to see it, re-live the moment but with a fresh twist. I've seen it a million times, but would see it with new eyes if more footage were added. *It would also find a new audience if it were marketed properly. * A new CD with extra stuff, wouldn't really matter. But seeing addition footage and extended scenes would just put this on everyone's radar once again and the soundtrack would sell even more.

If there were to be a celebration of an anniversary, why not have had it during the 25th anniversary? That would have made more sense. Otherwise, it would probably surprise Prince too, considering that WARNER BROS. would somehow have to be involved. Plus, if he/they were wise, they wouldn't plan to "surprise" Prince fans by such release. It would be in their best interest to build anticipation, get Prince on board to support his past, and re-release the movie in theaters (with bonus footage or a concert)... AND THEN re-release the brilliant soundtrack. No more surprises. Why set ourselves up for disappointment? [Edited 12/3/13 15:55pm]
