Do you think Prince had vocal lessons?

The : Honey i know i know the times are changing line was sung with vocal distotion. On The Beautiful Ones Prince is belting with his normal voice.U know that in 1980 Prince said that it hurts singing in his regular voice so he sings in falsetto.Yet only 3 years latter we hear Prince belting Do you want him or do you want me on the song the Beautiful Ones. And Prince screams are not just screeching. His screams are in tune and there again he uses vocal distortion. I think Prince had vocal lessons before 1999 album.what di xou think?

I think he probably just got a lot of practice touring and rehearsing, etc.

I think he's taken guitar lessons, vocal lessons, dancing lessons... I think that's been covered in books and stuff, but he definitely does everything with his own spin. No pun intended.

Seth Riggs has said that he's given Prince lessons. Probably just regular maintenance for tours, etc.

He had a coach back in 1980 or '81. It's written in Dez Dickerson's book 'My Time With Prince'. Several concerts had to be postponed because Prince had lost his voice. The coaching thought him how to use his voice properly.

hopefully he has. Singing is hard work and he would need someone to help help him make sure he dosen't hurt it.

That´s right but as far as I know he went through some more vocal training around the time when Purple Rain was shot, too.

Nothing to add to what's been said above except that I've always been very skeptical about P not having any vocal teacher even before 1981-84, because I've been a singer and I've been in a music school among many other singing students, and I can hardly believe someone can sing as "clean" as P already did on For You without getting lessons. Maybe his mom taught him a few things, that would make much sense since she was a singer. Now Prince is also a musical genius and he's got an "ear" that most of us don't have so it's not unthinkable that he's purely self-taught (save some coaching later on) in singing just as much as with the other instruments, but if that's the case then I'm REALLY impressed.

He has now gone to this whinny scretch when he sings now. A very windgy throat sound he now spits out rather then sing. Maybe he needs lessons again.

I believe he's had vocal coaches for a long time. His voice has improved dramatically over the years.

No... no way...he's had any lessons... I'm not musical, but these ears and eyes have learned something watching Lots of musicians....

I KNOW ppl who are singers or musicians on... the "knowledge' level and those who JUST know..

and you CAN tell/see the difference... Just on a personal Speculation I see Prince on a He Knows level...

Everything he does musically and vocally is Not of Textbook..

The one's who are "schooled" and of 'textbook".. come off with a very Distant sound, and can't Hear when they are playing or singing According to the written rules of music... they Yeah..it's ok.. but the feeling is MISSING.. You Can't Fake it..you KNOW when you hear someone performing from 'the book' or from Heart...

I dont believe Prince has Ever been told a Thing about music.. He's forever done his thing and does it from his heart..

He'd be nuts not to. He has his career riding on two little muscles vibrating in his throat, not to mention those who he employs. Whether it was just in the beginning or just for maintenance, it's no different than the world's top athletes who have a staff of trainers and coaches to help them be their best. That doesn't make him any less of a singer, nor does it make his performances any less "his." He's just trying to protect and optimize his most important asset.

yes he would have had extensive vocal training..singing is very technical and siprofessional singers need to be taught how to regulate their air flow to maximise their vocal strength and minimise voval damage.............thats it in a nutshell........

From what I can tell, he just listened to a lot of Leo Sayer records. I mean really,..By comparing Prince's early falsetto recordings, it's easy to see him copying Leo Sayer's style to achieve some success at the pop/disco charts. During the 1970s, Leo Sayer had the disco hit "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing". Similar singing styles, compared to," I Want To Be Your Lover". Now tell me this isn't true.
