funk? there isn't enough funk from that period to make a good solid compilation.

Are you being provocative?
mr.green

no. what's funky from 80-82?

Head
Partyup
Uptown (marginally)
Controversy
Sexuality (marginally)
Let's Work
1999 (marginal funk -- more dance/pop/rock)
DMSR
Automatic (marginally)
Lady Cab Driver.

doesn't make for a great compilation in my eyes.

Try:

Dirty Mind
Do It All Night
Uptown FOR SURE
Sexuality FOR SURE
Private Joy
Let's Pretend We're Married
Automatic FOR SURE
All the Critics Love U in New York
Irresistible Bitch

There's plenty.

Anji,I really like your choices of songs for a leaner, more commercially successful release of Emancipation but I would omit Savior and replace it with One Kiss At A Time.

I would have also included Style and released it as a single (at the time it was a very relevant song) and released a video for it as well.

I included Saviour because I do think it can be very powerful, aswell as catchy, and it features a great band. Style has always been a favourite of mine but alas, not within the constraints I put forward.

That IS his funkiest period! He had little spurts here and there from then on (some of Sign and the Black Album), but he was bringing it FULLY from 80-82 (83 if you wish).

no deal, because i really don't care. i like what i like. i don't get offended when others don't. and i don't expect others to be offended when i say i don't like what they like, seeing as they do it all the time.

I can respect your decision about Saviour vs. One Kiss but I'm going to respectfully disagree.
To me,Saviour has such an overblown, almost forced emotional demeanor to it(especially towards the end of the song) whereas One Kiss,in it's beautiful restraint, allows the emotion to...breathe.
It's an underrated soulful gem.

Emancipation.
Somebody's Somebody.
Soul Sanctuary
Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife
Eye Can't Make U Love Me
Dreamin' About U
The Holy River

A little stop-gap EP. One single, Holy River.

That right there is why I'll not read too much into your opinion. Emancipation is perhaps the weakest track on the entire album. You just listened to the album for the first time yesterday, so time and perspective.

Interestingly, these two catchy remakes featured very low on the orger's vote. Prince received alot of critisicm for his cover versions on this album. Like yourself, I enjoyed them however I do think I Can't Make You Love Me worked least well..
