Best of the 5 Great 2002 European Aftershows What's your favorite of those 5 amazing aftershows/one-off-concerts in Europe in 2002? Of course, I'm speaking of: London Marquee Dublin Spirit Copenhagen Vega Bataclan Nighttown My favorite is the Marquee. It's shorter than the others, but it's the funkiest thing I've ever heard from him. That second instrumental is friggin brilliant!! It's basically a song by Brass Construction if I recall, but Prince, Maceo, and Renato (yes, Renato) absolutely go bananas with the funk. And the versions of Dolphin and Sign o the Times are sweet. After that it's toss up, although I so somehow still haven't heard the Spirit show. Bataclan is heavy. Nighttown is a good mix of hard rock and funk, and Vega has some nice swagger. I've always felt like he was trying to recreate the vibe of the Small Club boot with these 2002 shows -- starting off with a long instrumental and playing blistering guitar throughout. The whole ONA era is one of the best ever. Especially the soundchecks and the aftershows were amazing. My fav is Vega.

Vega is one of my favorite shows ever. The opening few guitar heavy tracks are amazing if you've gotta pay for things that you've done wrong I've gotta big bill coming at the end of the day- Gil Scott Heron

the wealth of stellar performances on this tour is just so deep and wide that i'm *still* wrapping my head around it. / after everything i've listened to, i somehow managed to completely miss the London Marquee show / it's the most rewarding tour for me and i love almost every single performance, including the Paisley Park Xenophobia event, which was phenomenal. / The Celebration, The Tour, The Albums: *bliss*

The celebration that year was a truly unbelievable experience. The pinnacle of my fandom. All other live Prince experiences seem to pale in comparison.

I agree with you guys about the celebration and the aftershows part of the 2002 tour. Those are some of Prince's best moments ever. Not as awesome as his 80s albums but still very good. Now the main shows on the tour and TRC album -- low points for me, near the worst of his career. Talk about a guy with contradictions! Not so good at 9:00 on the main stage, phenomenal at 2:00 am on the little stage. "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

Nice topic, but you are wrong.Prince never tried to recreate the vibe of Small club boot.Small club gig was one of the first high quality soundboards fans got.that is the reason why it have legendary status. In 2002 Prince had done at least 5 aftershows that are much better than the Small Club. Prince was in a fusion jazz mood during that time so he wanted to do an improvisational numbers in the style of fusion jazz.
