Emancipation, as a successful album!

If Warners had been in control of Emancipation, the musical world would have received a tightly focused, double album consisting largely of commercial material.

However, prince left Warners and didn't do what was needed to sell his music to the masses. This is the story of what could have happened...
Without a doubt, Emancipation will have needed the strongest commercial single to promote it before the album's release. That song on this album is "Sleep Around," as verified by the vote put together by BorisFishPaw. It also has the most commercial appeal, in my opinion.
Lead single: Sleep Around. B-Side: Joint 2 Joint woot!

Following the potential success of the single, the album should be released as an excellently packaged, double album. The debate will war on as to exactly how many, and which specific, songs should be included, however, the following are the 14 most popular songs voted by you on BorisFishPaw's opinion pole.

Emancipation by prince

01 Jam Of The Year
02 Face Down
03 Somebody's Somebody
04 Sex In The Summer
05 Courtin' Time
06 Soul Sanctuary
07 Dreamin' Bout U
08 Joint 2 Joint
09 In This Bed, I Scream
10 My Computer
11 Sleep Around
12 Saviour
13 The Love We Make
14 The Holy River

Maintaining the momentum of the first single, the album will need another strong commercial song; I favour a midtempo ballad. I think "In This Bed, I Scream" is a fan's favourite and would form the perfect choice. It's also unique to most other R'n'B/pop songs but very catchy. I understand this could be a hit/miss record.

2nd single: In This Bed, I Scream. B-Side: My Computer worship

As a final single, we need the album's anthemic rock song. Undoubtedly, the most Purple Rain-esque number to Emancipation's credit is "The Holy River."

3rd single: The Holy River. B-Side: The Love We Make pray

So there you have it, a feasibly successful product! Emancipation is an album that showcases prince at his happiest and most playful. Enjoy it, if you can.

I know, Aaron. I just wanted to get rid of all of my own Emancipation 'hurt' and this thread solved it.

It works really well for me when I listen to that transition- it actually seems like one of the best ones.

Question for you: What would your sequence be of 10-15 tracks from 1980-1982 you'd include on a FUNK album? wink

funk? there isn't enough funk from that period to make a good solid compilation.

plus, the years don't work well together for me. 80/81, sure. and 82/83, sure. but not 80-82.

no. what's funky from 80-82?

Head
Partyup
Uptown (marginally)
Controversy
Sexuality (marginally)
Let's Work
1999 (marginal funk -- more dance/pop/rock)
DMSR
Automatic (marginally)
Lady Cab Driver.

doesn't make for a great compilation in my eyes.
