"Vegas!!!"

Just curious, what are all the examples y'all can come up with where Prince screams or sings "Vegas!" at the end of a song? I'm wondering if there are enough to make a playlist out of. Off the top of my mind, I can think of "The Ride," that live version of "Motherless Child" from the year 1999, and many live versions of Peach. I know there are others!

"The Jam" from ONA aftershow at The World on April 9, 2002. "It's About That Walk" from The Vault album for starters.

Ah, yes. Doesn't he say it real quietly at the end of "It's About That Walk"? I love that song but can't think of the ending just now. Thanks...not sure if I've heard that ONA aftershow...I only know them by city, not venue.

I believe the first time I hear Prince shout "Las Vegas" or "Vegas" was on "Small Club 1988"..?

I can't remember the track, maybe it was the last: "Rave"?

I have no idea why he shouts "Vegas",

anyone else here know why??

It precedes a big, showy, over the top Las Vegas showtime ending. It's quite tongue in cheek.

If I'm not mistaken, doesn't he say it at the end of the "America" video? And, yes, Robertgeorgeakabob's answer seems correct as to why he says it.

Hmmmm, you might be right! I will have to look into that, as that would be the earliest appearance of the term that I have come across. Thanks!

And thedance, I believe you are correct, in that he does say it on the Small Club boot...and maybe it was at the end of "Rave"? This is a good excuse for me to pull that gem out and relisten to it!

I think he was referring to the performance of "rave" during the small club show as opposed to the Rave DVD.

It's a cue for the band to end a song a certain way, in this case a long, sustained, vigorously strummed/drummed chord followed by an abrupt silence, usually cued by body language. Sort of like the way cheesy Vegas arrangers liked to end their charts back in the good old days. Make sense? The ending of That's Life as sung by Frank Sinatra comes to mind...

nod Crescendo intensity, emotional eclectic stylizing, raw and passionate artistic direction, rocking red hot interpretation flashes, spontaneous jumping to your feet, crossing your legs and leaning forward unconscious music inspired movement, Prince in his zone breaking through the 3rd wall and dramatic unexpected climaxes...that's what I thought shouting, moaning and expressing "Vegas" means to me...Prince including us in the journey

Was it good 4 U?
Was I what U wanted me 2 B?

If it's not alright...it will B

Yep, it's just a cue to the band to end the song in an over the top fashion vegas style.
