Prince and older artists getting media. Artist from The 80s don't get played anymore. There's a rule seems like over 20 years they stop playing you. Even if you are a huge artist they don't play you anymore. They play 2 songs. In the 80s this worked with James Brown and Aretha Franklin, but what about 80s artists. *0s artists were huger. Michael said before Off The Wall nobody was selling 20 million. That being so don't you think they should play more songs from 80s artists like Michael, Madona, and Prince.
I honestly think there she'd be an old pop station. Playing old songs from Pop artists and new ones. With that do you think Prince would be the artist he once was. Janet once did an arena 2 night. Now she can only do small ones of 6,000. IS it quality, age, or mediaplay....lack thereof? I thik it would help cause today's artists aren't selling like before. WIth Michael gone maybe more people would listen to Prince. The 80s were bigger. Working up a purple sweat.

I always seem to be hearing MJ or Madonna on the radio. Janet as well sometimes. I never hear Prince though. :/

I have a TOTALLY different experience. If I'm listening to the radio in my car, I usually have it on Kool 108 and I hear Prince practically every time I'm in the car. Then, I'll get out of the car and hear him in the restaurants I go to or shops I may enter. I don't know if it's fate or what but I seem to hear him all the time. He follows me everywhere I go.

Are you sure? To me the 80s is being constantly rammed down our throats, and it's always the same kitschy crap. I for one am sick to death of hearing Madonna et al. But hey ho, each to their own. I'm surprised you can't find a station devoted to 80s cheese. Try any regional Uk station...might I suggest CFM 96.4 FM, presented from the cultural hotspot that is Carlisle by Robbie Dee (who in no way has an annoying twatty voice, and in no way do I want to batter to a pulp). It's a veritable smorgasbord that serves mainly cheese. Listeners do so at their own risk, I take no responsibility for future psychological problems. don't play me...i'm over 30 and i DO smoke weed....

OK, I'm gonna say it straight and I apologize if that offends you cuz that honestly ain't the purpose. You need to work on your English: the way you write makes you sound like someone with psychological issues, a madman if u prefer, and that really isn't cool
As for what u say in your thread I don't know where u live but airwaves are flooded with radios playing hits from the 80's, and there are many smaller stations that play more recent music by 80's artist: I hardly ever listen to the radio and still, I've heard songs from almost every Prince album from the 2000's on the radio.
+ I don't understand your obsession, from thread to thread, with mainstream medias airplay and album sales. Music isn't about that and the fact that regularly folks come here that believe that it is tells me that mainstream medias have managed to brainwash a whole generation, and that really sucks. I get the same crap as a writer, to be honest, every once in a while people I meet tell me that if I'm a talented writer how come I ain't on TV and don't make big bucks with my writings... This is science fiction, not real life: most of the talented artists that walk Earth today can hardly make a living of what they're doing, some manage to live decently from it and a very few get to stardom. Always been like that, always will. A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Ok I do have ADHD and Depression. ADHD makes you smart and creative. Depression makes you slow, but not mad.
I live in Houston and only Majic 102 would play Michael or Prince's new stuff. Maybe 96.5. Then also 99.1. But for the mainstream Pop stations and youg stations KRBE, Hot 95.7 <The Box they don't old acts. Take Janet...Call On Me and SO Excited were the only singles they played off 20 Y.O. SHe was saying that's why it didn't do well.
And as for typing, I took typing. For some reason this forum messes up. Don't know if it's this comp or the site but what I type get's scambled in other paragraphs and such. In The US after 20 years they stop giving airplay. Don't recall Prince since The 90s. They did play Musicology on Mtv and Black Sweat. [Edited 10/23/13 16:59pm] Working up a purple sweat.

Radio generally doesn't play really old acts, except on an oldies station, and they don't play new songs from them. In the 1980's, I don't remember hearing Perry Como or Dean Martin on a Top 40 station. They had the 'easy listening' format for music from that era. I did hear Johnny Mathis, but that was because he had a TV theme song (Without Us from Family Ties) as a single. Little Richard had a new soundtrack song too (Great Gosh A Mighty), but it wasn't played that much. There were those Dirty Dancing oldies soundtracks, and some of those songs were played on the current Top 40 stations, particularly Do You Love Me by The Contours. . Ben E. King's Stand By Me, It's A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong, and Daydream Believer by The Monkees were also re-released and got airplay. All of these songs were on then current soundtracks except Daydream Believer. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

1)Pop radio plays only music who are on major labels for the most part. 2) Since the industry is down in sales they are NOT willing to have a whole lot of room for diversity of music styles. 3) Oddly enough Janalle Monae and Prince both have trouble playing their new stuff on the radios because they don't fit most radio formats. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

People with ADHD are smart and creative. Michael had it, Tome Cruise has it, and so do Justin Timberlake and STeven Hawking.
They do play old acts in Europe, but not North America. Prince acts like he has ADHD but it's not confirmed. Working up a purple sweat.

here in America,80s artists get played alot on the Old School/flashback-type stations and there are alot of 'em.In my area,we have a station like this and they play alot of Prince,MJ,Madonna and others.
My main problem with this station? They play the same 4 or 5 songs by these artists! They focus only on the biggest hits ("Beat It","When Doves Cry","Into The Groove",etc) instead of playing some of their lesser known hits.I would lose my mind if they were to play something like "Let's Work",lol

But these stations don't play new music by them, like 'classic rock' stations don't. 'Old school' & 'retro' are just newer names for "oldies". Classic rock also play the same songs over and over like Freebird, Barracuda, Blinded By The Light, Dream On, Jamie's Crying, etc. . I don't think Paul McCartney, George Benson, Spin Doctors, Kenny Rogers, Brand New Heavies, or Joan Jett who have new albums are getting played on a Top 40 station. Nor do newer acts who make older sounding music like Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings & Vintage Trouble get airplay. I don't even hear them or Bettye LaVette on an "urban contemporary" station, which tends to play new Charlie Wilson music a lot. You might hear them on a college radio station, but they run from pledges, and don't count as far as charting goes. I always find it funny when people complain about 80s acts not having pop hits now and "how horrible radio is these days".
As others have stated, how many decades-old acts were having hits in the 80s? Paul McCartney's pop career petered out by the end of the decade, The Stones were consistent but winding down their top 40 run, Aretha had a few hits, James Brown had that fluke hit from Rocky. But for the most part new, young acts dominated and pushed those artists off the airwaves. And those 60s artists were only 20 years into their careers at that point. Prince is nearly 40 years in now...that would be like 40s superstars Bing Crosby and Glenn Miller having hits in the 80s (which didn't happen). If you're a high schooler now listening to mainstream radio you weren't even alive the last time Prince had a top ten hit. Also, let's not pretend it was only quality acts having hits in the 80s...for every MJ and Prince there were a dozen Falcos, Air Supplys, and Warrants dominating the charts.
And older acts do still have hits, us old-timers just don't like to acknowledge that those old acts are people most of us still think of as new. Mariah Carey had a top 20 hit this year and she's 23 years into her career now; that's as long as Aretha had been around in 1985. R. Kelly is having a hit with Lady Gaga right now and he's 21 years in. Pearl Jam just had a number one album. Britney and Justin are 15 years in now. Hell, even Kanye and Maroon 5 are a decade deep into having top 40 hits.
Maybe Prince could still have a fluke Cher/"Believe" kinda hit but it's unlikely. Let's let today's kids have their artists, the same way we had ours.

People (usually an older generation) have always said this too about ragtime, jazz, early rock 'n roll/rockabilly, teen idols, The Beatles, disco, light rock, arena rock, new wave, progressive rock, bubblegum, rap, disco, hair metal, etc. It's nothing new. . Only time i hear Prince on the radio is on oldie stations and on 105.7 in Dallas. To be honest, Prince made the public forget about him with his various antics. He got what he wanted.

He's over a certain age, so not as likely to get much airplay on a current music station. At best, his new music might get played on an urban contemporary station, but only the slow jams. Prince's look and image probably would not appeal to the average hip hop listener either. thedance said: "Black Sweat" got a lot radio airplay here, iirc. Thank God Prince isn't making what's considered radio friendly "hits" today. The stuff in the mainstream these days is nothing but garbage. Every current song on the radio sounds the same or sounds like it was written in 5 minutes.

On r&b stations they usually play a mix of old and new,but the radio culture is different across genres. On any r&b station there always seem to be a flashback hour (or two) usually around lunch hour that plays 80s. Funny that's where I get my fix of old school everyday .a lot of Prince, Michael,Janet and even some Madonna (Holiday,Lucky Star,Into The Groove....her crossover hits) & George Michael. In the 80s there was much more appreciation for older music and older artists.Aretha ,Chaka,Patti,Dionne,Stevie Wonder,Springsteen Tina were all older, and were HUGE in the 80s and had careers that started in the 60s. And you still heard their old stuff on the radio.

If you're talking FM radio, they have to play what they're paid to, even if it's crap. There are stations that will play teen pop because that's their target market and the advertisers target that demographic. Gone are the days of the true DJ who'd choose what to play. So adults turn to SiriusXM radio, Pandora, iTunes Radio and Spotify. And satellite radio does have dedicated stations for 80s, 90s, etc.

In the UK all you hear is 80's pop, BBC radio 2 love it, and all the new stuff they play is either reformed 80's bands or new bands that try and sound like the 80's, I call it the quiff's and keyboards brigade. Nothing original at all. Then if you have DAB you have the choice of Absolute 80's or Smooth 80's.
